No dum in Kareena's item number

No dum in Kareena's item number
Item numbers seem to be slowly fading away. Rather, they seem to be losing its sting. There's no more dum left in these songs which are sometimes injected into the scenes for the sole purpose of titillating the front-benchers. Earlier, these ‘numbers' were smartly included in the script. Some were well portrayed with good dancing steps as well.

But, of late, the dance steps have gone missing, and the focus is only on the heroine's body and the way she gyrates her bottom.

Kareena Kapoor Khan trying her best in BROTHERS with Mera Naam Mary Hai was a rather comic sight. She did all that was within her power to scorch the screen but ended up being a damp squib. The music was blaring and the steps were amateurish: no innovation. The only thing left for her to do was widen her eyes and try some ‘nautanki' which also did not work. The choreographer needs to take a rap on his knuckles!

To add to her woes, the movie was going nowhere in the first half, and as soon as the number and her screen-time ended, people heaved a sigh of relief.

It was I N T E R M I S S I O N !

When item numbers were fully loaded!
Speaking of ‘dum' in an item number, who can forget Yaana Gupta in DUM with ‘Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo'. Riding On a buffalo, she made a killing as the song catapulted her into ‘instant stardom'.

Of late, Katrina Kaif managed to set the adrenalin pumping with her energetic Chikni Chameli performance in AGNEEPATH (incidentally, the same director made BROTHERS as well). The song was a study on how an item number should be picturized. The number was peppy and the dance steps had raw energy. That song was the basis on which the remake was promoted.

Another actress to sizzle in an item number was Bipasha Basu in OMKARA with Beedi Jaliale, a number which had the nation grooving to the beats for quite some time.

And who can forget Malaika Arora Khan [who made item numbers popular in the Neolithic Bollywood Age] gyrating on top of a running train to the beats of A R Rahman with Chaiyya Chaiyya in DIL SE. Balancing and dancing atop a running train was something not seen in a Bollywood Movie. She did it without the help of Zandu Balm then!

There's also Ishaa Koppikar with her fiery moves in Ram Gopal Varma's COMPANY.

Certainly looks like it's Khallas for item numbers!

Jacqueline Fernandez and ‘item appearances'!
Considering item numbers are losing their charm, methinks ‘item appearances' are soon making their presence felt… or so it seems.

How else can one explain the presence of Jacqueline Fernandez in two back-to-back releases, BANGISTAN and BROTHERS? These have to be item appearances!

In both films, her role is ill-defined and she is just there because she needs to be there. Poor girl, it was not her fault. I'm sure she might have been lured with a promise of hers being the role that changes the momentum of the movie, or something to that effect.

And many a times, a movie turns out to be completely different from what was actually written in the script! You will find many murmurs to this effect in Bollywood, but no one will be willing to talk about it, openly. MISS TANAKPUR HAAZIR HO was a recent casualty. There's also SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS. But that Tigmanshu Dhulia film's downfall had more to do with the technical team being completely different from the first edition.
