The Bachchan family is very different from the others! And they are different not only because of the glamour and celebrity status, but also because they are all very grounded and follow the traditions and rituals of our Indian society!
To celebrate birthdays these days, we cut the cake and blow the candles much like how people do in the west, but the Bachchan family celebrate their birthday the desi way! Instead of cutting the “birthday cake”, they eat khoya and ring in the birthday.
Big B speaking about Abhishek's birthday celebrations said, “Abhishek used to celebrate his birthday with cakes in his childhood, but then eventually, we turned that to khoya. We still celebrate his birthday with khoya.”
Big B said that he doesn't understand why celebrating the birthday with cake only. “I don't understand the culture of celebrating with cakes. On birthday, there should be a Pooja, people should be invited over, why is a cake made? And on top of that, you have to put candles on the cake in accordance with your age, light the candles and blow them over and also the birthday song will be sung. Now, a new thing has started, to apply the cake on the face. What is this? I don't understand this. This should be left. People should follow this in the videsh only why are we getting it here?”
Interestingly, Amitabh Bachchan's father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan used to bring khoya on his birthday & big B would cut that and celebrate and his special day in this manner. We would also like to tell you that the newest member of the Bachchan family, Aaradhya too celebrates her birthday with khoya.
