Amidst all the preparations and scrambling to head off 65th Berlin Film Festival, where his film DHANAK (which means rainbow) will be screened and have its World premiere, filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor managed to take out some time of his hectic schedule to speak to us. “Berlin is one of the top five film festivals of the world. And big festivals have big things to do. I am getting all the stuff ready. It's going really crazy!” Nagesh expresses his state of mind, who is rearing to go for the fest!

He adds further, “I am extremely glad that my film DHANAK is being screened at the prestigious film fest. We will do the usual screenings and get the sales agents and distributors to spread the movie. Since Berlin film fest is a huge market, it will help reach the film to a wider world audience.”

Ask what made him choose DHANAK over his other films to send to Berlinale fest and he says, “It's very subjective. Some work is liked and worthy enough, while some is not. Moreover, DHANAK was apt for its content. I have been sending a lot of my work to International market. And it is a question of getting right stories appreciated and right work highlighted.”

While Nagesh's films are socially relevant pertaining to domestic market, very earthy and regional in nature, we wonder how DHANAK will appeal the global audience. Nagesh explicates, “Every story is universal. I have always made movies for both Indian and global audience.”

DHANAK, which is the only film from India to be selected for the prestigious film festival in the Generation KPlus category to be held from Feb 5-15, is a story about an elder sister, who promises her eight-year-old visually challenged brother that his vision will return before his ninth birthday. And this leads to an interesting journey through Rajasthan.

Nagesh says DHANAK will be loved for its fable like elements. “The whole idea was giving DHANAK a fable like element. It's beautiful film and emphasizes that world is a good place to live in. DHANAK is a happy film.”

The filmmaker divulges his inspiration for the film in brief. “The very idea of the film stems from the image of a boy and a girl based in Rajasthan that I came across. So I felt like telling this story. But beyond this it would be very hard to describe anything.”

On a parting note, ask the filmmaker about his attire at the fest & how he is gearing up, and he says candidly, “Well, I don't operate like that. But, I will be wearing a Hyderabadi Sherwani at the fest.”

Meanwhile, we wish the filmmaker all the luck for his film DHANAK!
