An Open Letter To Varun Dhawan

Dear Varun

Let me come straight to the point. You've raised the bar for newcomers by improving with every outing. From STUDENT OF THE YEAR to HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA to MAIN TERA HERO, you've firmly entrenched yourself in the hearts of moviegoers as a ‘dynamite talent'.

What has prompted me to write this missive to you is your jhalak in BADLAPUR, Sriram Raghavan's next, which is slated for release in February 2015. The few snippets that were shown on screen was enough to reiterate to the already fida fan that you are a cosmos… still unexplored.

It's easy for an actor to get set in a mold and stay away from trying out different roles, especially early on in one's career. But BADLAPUR, according to the trailer, will see you in a different light altogether. No more of that soft-faced, bubbly, comedian; or that effervescent romantic. This is die-hard action-revenge and if one goes by the visuals on screen, you have already scored 10/10, in my books.

Kids from the industry have gotten it on a platter and it is always with cynicism that one views sons and daughters of producers, directors and actors who get a long rope even when their films flop. But talent like you, Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor have proven that you guys deserve every bit of the accolade. Your hard work is there for all to see, along with genuine talent. You've taken giant steps since October 19, 2012.

In SOTY, you improved with every scene and by the end, you stood out. In HSKD you displayed that rare ability to make us laugh and cry at the same time with your charming presence and disarming talent. MTH was a riot. Seenu, your character, had all the opportunities to go overboard, but you tamed him and stood out. What also stood out in this film was your improvisation in delivering a dialogue, a big leap from SOTY. Not to mention your flexibility whilst fighting and fluidity on the dance floor.

And now BADLAPUR! Congratulations in advance for what will be a fantastic performance, and also for raking in the moolah for the makers.

Like I said earlier, you are a Cosmos… still unexplored… great things are in you.

God Bless You
Martin D'Souza
