As he celebrates his birthday today, Ketan Mehta would be hoping that as a birthday gift from the nation he would get and love and accolade in the form of patronization of his latest offering- biopic DASHRATH MANJHI. As he is returning to film making after a long hiatus, some may ask the question who is Ketan Mehta? For the uninitiated, Ketan Mehta is credited with films like HOLI, MIRCH MASALA, MANGAL PANDEY, SARDAR, BHAVANI BHAVAI, MAYA MEMSAHEB, RANG RASIYA etc., to name a few and has been at the fore front in dwelling on stories of personal struggles, and subsequent triumphs and he comes with another Biopic Dashrath Manjhi.
KETAN MEHTA AND MANJHI
Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Dashrath Manjhi was a story that needed to be told. It is a story of how a man for the sake of his love through his sheer grit, will power and confidence created a road out of a mountain way to cut the traveling time down from 40 km to 1 km. Dashrath Manjhi is a part of folklore in Bihar in India and this is a story that needs to be told to the world, more so to the present generation in the country who may not even be aware that a man like this exists in our country. Fed on the lore of stories and larger than life characters imported from Hollywood, Dashrath Manjhi could indeed be a reality check with our history.
What is different about Dashrath Manjhi is the fact that this is the story of a common man and his struggle of epic proportions made by an Indian for the audiences around the world that would surely make our hearts swell with pride.
There could not have been a better director that Ketan Mehta to make a biopic on Dashrath Manjhi as he has dealt with this genre in the past and has given us 2 super biopics in the form of MANGAL PANDEY and SARDAR.
The choice of Nawazuddin Siddiqui is perhaps apt as he is an actor who slips into the skin of the character as he has shown in the past and this could perhaps the real launching pad that Nawazuddin Sidduiqqi may have been looking for. Biopic makes an impacted statement when the choice of the actor to etch the role is dealt with great finesse and in this case the choice indeed is apt and Nawazuddin is an actor par excellence. Coming after a humungous success of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, Nawazuddin could not have asked for a better solo film, as he has now made a name for himself and he would be able to draw the initial footfalls at the box office to make the film a huge success.
