A campaign on honking by Red Fm which began last month caught our attention whilst changing radio stations. The campaign would have gone unnoticed if not for the catchphrase ‘Don't Be Horny', which immediately brought to our mind the video which was uploaded by actress Bhairavi Goswami on youtube, October 21, 2014.

When we called Bhariavi for her reaction, she was not surprised at all. She was amused. “Several of my friends have been messaging and calling me for the past month. Even my lawyer called me asking if I wanted to initiate legal proceedings against Red FM,” she said.

Bhairavi is actively involved in several social causes. Apart from animal welfare she also wants to do her part to raise awareness about Global Warming, “It's not only the number one environmental challenge we face today but also the most important issue facing all of humanity. Noise pollution has a massive impact on Global Warming.”

We also spoke to Anand Raj, National Programming Head, Red FM, who was happy that this campaign is receiving a lot of support from Bollywood. When informed that Bhairavi had a similar campaign with the same tag line, Anand said, “I wouldn't be aware of it. We started this in association with the Mumbai police.”

When we pressed further saying, ‘isn't this amounting to copying', Anand replied saying: “We wouldn't stoop to that level. Maybe it's just a coincidence.”

A happy coincidence!

Excerpts from an interview with Bhairavi.

What's your reaction to your idea being hijacked?
Imitation is the best form of flattery. I'm flattered that a reputed Radio station that employs hundreds of people pan India chooses to copy a concept of Team BhaGo.

They have also involved the Mumbai Police. Why are you not involving authorities to ensure your campaigns meet with the completion you intend it to have?
I don't believe that involving the police is the solution. It's impossible to fine honkers. At a signal, 20 vehicles are honking, if you stop all of them to fine you will only have massive jams which would result in more honking.  I have studied the honking problem in detail. The only solution is education.

Are you angry that your idea has been blatantly used?
Absolutely not; I'm happy that somebody is furthering the cause. In today's Digital age everything is documented chronologically. The video was filmed on June 20, 2014. It was called ‘Horn Not OK Please'. It was scripted and directed by Gautam ShiKnis. The video was uploaded on October 21, 2014, just before Diwali. It is a fact that I initiated this cause a year ago. Nobody can take that away from me.

What's your take of plagiarism in this country?
Plagiarism exists anywhere and everywhere in the world. It's rampant in India because laws aren't strictly enforced.

And why did you pick by the cause of honking?
I read headlines in leading newspapers of how Mumbai is the noisiest city in the world. I did some research and found that noise has a much larger impact on our health, body and mind than most people realize. What was most disturbing was that almost everyone I spoke to didn't seem to care or think noise was a problem. But research proved that noise was the number one factor causing road rage, hypertension, high blood pressure, migraine and several other ‘'lifestyle diseases'.

You will be shocked with our findings that the decibel level was 130 at several traffic junctions-the same as a rock concert in Europe or a jumbo jet take off.
