Dibakar Banerjee's upcoming film DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY has evoked the memories of National award winning actor Rajit Kapur who had portrayed the character of ‘Byomkesh Bakshi' on small screen years ago and became a household name. And interestingly, people still can't get enough of his character. “Yes people still address me with that name (Byomkesh),” Rajit laughs.

Though people are going gaga over Dibakar's new Byomkesh ‘Sushant Singh Rajput', Rajit has been constantly getting calls. “A lot of people have been calling me up. People keep asking why aren't you part of new BYOMKESH? In fact when I told this to Dibakar that I am getting more calls than you guys, we had a hearty laugh. Indeed! Detective Byomkesh Bakshy has become talk of the town.”

So is it annoying or enjoying becoming synonym with the screen name? “It's neither enjoying nor annoying. I am just surprised with the kind of popularity it has generated. It has gone beyond and I never realized that it will be so huge. In fact there are two fan mails in Byomkesh Bakshy's name and I was totally unaware about it. I just got to know lately. The new generation has been watching the old series on video sharing platform. People are still reviewing it,” says Rajit.
What makes ‘Byomkesh Bakshi' so popular? Is it the first Indian fictional detective character that made way to people's heart? “Not really. There have been many like ‘Karamchand Jasoos'. However, what has worked for Byomkesh is, it left its mark for simplicity and the story is also strong,"says Rajit.

But ask Rajit if Byomkesh was his career's best role and he says, “I don't think I can answer that. It's people who can comment or say anything about the role.”

When asked about his take on Dibakar's DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKSHY and can a 3-hour feature film justify the long series, he said, “I presume it's a different interpretation. I don't have any take. Everyone is free to represent the way they want to. I don't know there are so many films being made, so many versions of ‘Devdas' have also been made and people will keep on doing it.”

But the old Byomkesh was known for its simplicity and morality, while the newer one is tweaked and bit complicated? To which he replied, “We have moved on with time and new technology has come in. Why would Dibakar want to stick to older style? Let him have his own interpretation. He is open to present the way he wants to.”
Though he won the hearts of audience by playing ‘Byomkesh Bakshi', he is not really keen to play it again, if ever offered.
And like all of us Rajit is also eagerly looking forward to Dibakar's film, which is set to hit the screens on April 3rd, 2015. “Yes I am excited to watch Dibakar's DETECTIVE BYOMKESH BAKHSY,” Rajit signs off.
