Dharma Productions founded by Karan Johar's father Yash Johar in 1976 completes its 35 years of 'Dostana' (friendship) with desire, passion and dreams.
Yash Johar known for his goodwill, friendship and unique quality of maintaining good relations in the industry started his career under the expert guidance of S. Mukherjee (Sashadhar Mukherjee) - Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar's brother-in-law.

Working as a production executive for S. Mukherjee's banner Filmistan Studio, Yash earnestly studied the minutes of production and excelled as a distinguish production controller during his times. Starting with Sunil Dutt's production house Ajanta Arts, Yash Johar was associated with films like MUJHE JEENE DO and YEH RAASTE HAI PYAAR KE.
Yash Johar then joined Dev Anand's Navketan and handled the production of the classic film GUIDE for which he was honoured by Dev Anand at a movie's success party along with Amit Khanna.
Jokingly called as IS Johar (famous comedian during those times) by the thespian Dilip Kumar, Yash Johar smilingly and honestly corrected the thespian every time. Later on Dilip Kumar starred as a lead in Dharma productions DUNIYA.
Apart from GUIDE, Yash Johar handled the production of Dev Anand's memorable films like JEWEL THIEF and HARE RAMA HARE KRISHNA.
Before launching Dharma Productions in 1976, Yash Johar also worked as a line producer for foreign films shooting in India and also started a garment export firm near Mahalaxmi Bridge in Mumbai.
Yash Johar's mastery over production control, his remarkable goodwill amongst the industry folks motivated him to launch his production house Dharma Productions in 1976.
Their first production did a huge casting coup of its times – starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman under the direction of the prolific Raj Khosla in DOSTANA 1980. DOSTANA was the third highest grosser of the year after Feroz Khan's QURBANI and Ramesh Sippy's SHAAN.
DOSTANA was remade as SATTAM in Tamil starring Kamal Haasan and Sarath Babu.
Known for its mega star cast, lavish sets and exotic locations, Yash Johar never allowed himself to be the prey of market reactions to failures of his big budget projects like MUQADDAR KA FAISLA (starring Raj Kumar), DUNIYA (starring Dilip Kumar).
He continued his large-heartedness in producing AGNEEPATH which later went on to become a 'cult' though the box-office expectations.
Like a dutiful son Karan Johar revived Dharma by striking its first major gold with KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI that launched Karan as director. Previously Karan was assisting Aditya Chopra in DDLJ. Yash Johar and Yash Chopra shared a good rapport.
Yash Raj Films distributed Dharma's DOSTANA, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, KABHI KHUSHI KABI GHAM etc.
SRK whole-heartedly supported Karan for his debut KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI in 1998. Two years later Father Yash Johar thanked in gratitude by becoming the chief advisor for SRK's debut production PHIR BHI DIL HAI HINDUSTANI. Later the wizard in production Yash Johar took charge of the production while the movie was nearing completion.
Lovingly called as 'Uncle' by SRK, Yash Johar established Dharma as a household name in family entertainers. The vision, desire and dream to excel gets 35 years old and is raring to go with Karan Johar scaling new heights in exploring different genres and believing in himself. By fruitfully posting the success tag on AGNEEPATH and presenting India's answer to Hollywood's James Cameron with the mega blockbuster BAHUBALI, it seems 'Shandaar' time for Dharma is on..
The goodwill established by Yash Johar continues as the DOSTANA with desire, passion and dreams moves ahead...
As rightly put by Karan on announcing its 35 anniversary on social media platforms, '''Its #35YearsOfDharma today.... My father's goodwill and his blessings are my biggest strength.... The company stands on his vision today''.
