Short films seem to be the new in thing these days what with many mainstream celebs acting in them. After Radhika Apte in ‘Ahalya', Manoj Bajpayee & Raveena Tandon in ‘Jai Hind', now Jaggu Dada aka Jackie Shroff has also featured in one called ‘Makhmal'.
Says Jackie, “‘Makhmal' is simple, sensitive, emotional and effective. I don't want to sound self-important but I really liked everything about the film and I hope to work with Faraz Ali someday on his feature length film. I met him for a reading and I was so moved that I agreed to be a part of it. He has already managed to say so much in a seventeen-minute-long film that I am waiting for a two hours long film from him.”
He further added, “I think he achieved to make a beautiful film. It's a straight from the heart Hindustani film which will be understood globally. It's a big challenge to do a small format film because it's only the length which is short and not the message. The film lives up to its name; it's really soft, bhidu.'
Apart from Jackie acting in the film, Shafqat Amanat Ali has also given his voice to the film in the form of a song.
Says the singer, “The song had a very good melody and lyrics, I had never sung for a short film before and the makers were friends. So all these reasons made me say yes to it.”
He also said, “It was a five-minute-song and I knew that it was very important in the film. The entire story revolves around the character and the song. I found this very interesting.”
With established names being associated with the short film format, we can expect to see more short films in the future. And with the internet spreading its wings in India, short films are here to stay.
