The original Superstar of Bollywood, Rajesh Khanna after the mega success of his hit films like ARADHANA, AMAR PREM, KATI PATANG, ANAND, NAMAK HARAAM, DO RAASTE, HAATHI MERE SAATHI, etc is reported to have become quite arrogant and egoist.
As a result it is believed that he not only lost his stardom quite early but also lost the privilege of working with many esteemed filmmakers who declined to bow down to his starry tantrums. One among the many stalwart filmmakers was movie mogul Kamal Amrohi.
Few know that after the astounding success of PAKEEZAAH, Kamal Amrohi had a planned a magnum opus love story based on the legendary Arabian love tale Laila Majnu. The film was titled MAJNU.
In an interview Tajdar Amrohi, son of legendary filmmaker Kamal Amrohi informed, “Abba (Father) wished to make the movie on a very large scale. He wanted the movie to be bigger than PAKEEZAAH and MUGHAL-E-AZAM. Hence he signed Rajesh Khanna as the hero, who was the reigning superstar and selected Rakhee, as the heroine because she had given a hit opposite Kaka (Rajesh Khanna, affectionately addressed in Bollywood) in DAAG and even won the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award.”
According Tajdar Amrohi a lavish Mahurat was held in Mumbai at Kamalistan Studio, where the entire Bollywood had descended. The media went berserk with the inimitable combination of great film wizard Kamal Amrohi and superstar Rajesh Khannna coming together.
Thus amidst high expectation the film began but Tajdar Amrohi mourns, “ What began as a highly anticipated movie could not be completed and had to be soon shelved as Abba, unlike other producers did not tolerate Rajesh Khanna's haughty stardom, his late arrival on sets and his dictatorship on sets!”
