The coming Friday will witness the release of Syed Ahmed Afzal's Randeep-Meenakshi starrer LAAL RANG, the Ashwini Iyer Tiwari directed NIL BATTEY SANNATA along with the Boman Irani starrer SANTA BANTA PVT. LTD. etc. With so many films, the business is bound to get divided plus the still in circulation THE JUNGLE BOOK and FAN is likely to be more than a handful for the new ventures.

Checking out, YRF's Shah Rukh Khan starrer, FAN, the film started on a good note, netting around 19.20 crore on the opening day (Ram Navami), given that it is totally out of SRK's comfort zone; no slapstick comedy, light moments, romance, or trademark clichéd family drama. The film did fall on Saturday, but picked up again on Sunday, thus netting 52 crore (to be validated ) during the opening weekend from India. While that is fine, FAN saw a pronounced fall during the weekdays and is likely to end the first week in the 70-73 crore band. Having said that, producer Yash Raj (being the worldwide distributors too!), will be in the profit zone, at the end of the first week itself, as 60 percent of the 105 crore (all inclusive cost) has already been recovered via non-theatrical rights. FAN is quite good in the overseas grossing $6.30m, with £407,000 from UK and $1,360,000 from the US, during the opening weekend (15-17 April).
Last week was totally dominated by the Hollywood venture, THE JUNGLE BOOK, which netted a huge 75 crore (for all versions and formats), and is all set to go past the 100 crore barrier and maybe, touch the 150 crore mark, an unprecedented achievement for a foreign film in India!
