Two to tango. Shah Rukh Khan's highly awaited FAN alleged resemblance to Hollywood living legend Robert De Niro (THE FAN 1996) and/ or Edward Bianchi on screen adaptation of Bob Randall story – THE FAN (1981) still cannot stop King Khan in claiming his crown back...
FAN has things rolling in the right direction, but somehow people are drawing similarities with Hollywood living legend Robert De Niro's forgettable 1996 flick THE FAN in which an obsessed baseball fanatic Gil ( De Niro) obsession with his favorite baseball player Bobby Rayburn (Wesley Snipes) turns into a nightmare in Bobby's life. (hmm sounding similar.. just wait). The movie got panned by critics though De Niro was hailed for his performance…
Well many have spoken about the above alleged similarity (or inspiration) they say in this industry but we have found out another Hollywood flick - a pathetic 1981 American Horror - THE FAN by Edward Bianchi scoring brownie points over the Robert De Niro flick in its alleged similarities. The 1981 American horror is on screen adaptation of Bob Randall story of a Broadway star Sally Ross (Lauren Bacall), who is worshipped by ardent fan Douglas Breen (Michael Biehn). Breen's infatuation quickly turns into an obsession, and when his passionate letters receive no response, he snaps his unrequited love into an intense hatred. ( those who believed De Niro's film drew similarities, read this again).. ,
But we still believe that the touted Shah Rukh Khan comeback in FAN will be unstoppable.
Ironically, this American horror is worse than De Niro's flick. When we turn pages of SRK's Bollywood history, DARR (inspired by Rober De Niro's brilliant CAPE FEAR) gave the power to the myth called Shah Rukh Khan getting established in Bollywood. The over energetic Delhi boy cared a damn about the good-guy image (enjoyed by Salman and Aamir) and introduce a likable grey shades of obsession in DARR and ANJAAM.
After 23 years the same production house Yash Raj Films rekindles the famous SRK obsession in Maneesh Sharma's FAN, the story of Gaurav, an obsessed fan of actor Aryan Khanna (Shah Rukh again, in a double role), and what happens when they cross paths.
Maneesh Sharma's movie may or may not be influenced by those pathetic alleged Hollywood adaptations but the masterstroke of casting SRK in a double role (its biggest USP) - making him play his own obsessed fan, gulps up the negativity promising terrific moments on screen and increasing the possibility of a true blockbuster that his FAN's are waiting for.
FAN hai toh SRK hai.. or rahega.. ‘Hollywood se inspired idea ho na ho'...
