Looks like B-town is smitten with the funda of role reversal. R. Balki's latest film KI & KA starring Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan explored gender role reversal and in fact challenged the gender based division of labour in the wedlock. While Kareena played an ambitious career-oriented woman, Arjun essayed the role of a homemaker.
||FAN AND KI AND KA
Now Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming much touted film FAN, in which SRK plays both star and a fan, is playing on the idea of role reversal. Right from day one, the makers of FAN have been endorsing the concept 'Ab Tak Fan Star Ke Piche Bhaagta Tha, Ab Star Fan Ke Piche Bhagega' (All these years fans chased their favourite stars, now stars will be seen chasing fans) through trailers, promos or teasers, that clearly indicates how tinsel town is besotted with 'role exchanging' thought.
It's really good for Bollywood being experimental. But is the audience game for it? While Balki brought forth a brave concept with his film KI & KA and it was expected to embark a trend or perhaps the change the stereotype mindset, but the film didn't get the desired overwhelming response. Hopefully, the Maneesh Sharma directed film starring Shah Rukh Khan in interesting roles (where SRK plays his own screen idol), pleases the aam junta and they happily lap up the role reversal idea.
If it works then, Bollywood is certainly opening doors for newer avenues!
