No doubt Akshay Kumar's RUSTOM based on the famous Nanavati murder case is brilliantly executed by producer Neeraj Pandey and is deservingly doing roaring business at box office. However despite being a taut suspense thriller Akshay Kumar's RUSTOM falls short to legendary filmmaker Gulzar's take on the Nanavati murder case in his 70's hit film ACHANAK.

RUSTOM, GULZAR AND ACHANAK
RUSTOM, GULZAR AND ACHANAK

Besides handling the sensitive issue of extramarital affair Gulzar raised many vital issues in the film that made even the hardcore film critics to sit back and acknowledge the brilliance of Gulzar as a director par excellence because after sensitive social dramas like KOSHISH and PARICHAY, Gulzar stunned the film fraternity with a suspense thriller!!!

The movie raised important issues like the battle between our judicial system and medical science. The film depicts when the fatally injured hero (Vinod Khanna) is brought to the hospital; the doctor attending him struggles round the clock to save him. Eventually when the patient is miraculously saved the doctor is dazed to know that the patient whom they saved is sentenced to death and will be hanged.

Thus the movie posed a serious question on the hypocrisy of our law and compelled our judiciary system to ponder on the futility of death penalty.

To add cherry on the cake the movie is technically brilliant. Till date the movie is remembered for it exceptional use of flashback. In fact it is one the best suspense thriller in Indian cinema that entertains and compels to think thus establishing why Gulzar is such a great filmmaker!

We at glamsham.com wish Gulzar sahab a very happy 82nd birthday.
