It was obvious and we were one of the first to predict (after the first weekend itself!) that Akshay Kumar's AIRLIFT was on its way to be the first hit of 2016. While that has been acknowledged by almost all sources now, the film is on course to be a super hit, fingers crossed!
As we had stated in our Saturday box-office update, Raja Krishna Menon directed AIRLIFT netted 82 crore during the opening week, and based on the second weekend number, the film crossed the 100 crore mark in ten days from India. In the process, AIRLIFT becomes the first centurion of 2016 and the fourth for Akshay Kumar, the others being HOUSEFULL 2, ROWDY RATHORE and HOLIDAY.
In addition to the good performance at the Indian box-office, AIRLIFT continues its impressive overseas run grossing over $ 5m, till the second weekend (29-31 Jan), but more on that in our weekly box-office column.
