Ajay Singh Deol aka Sunny Deol is a man of such imposing brawn. At the age of 56, this trendsetting muscleman from Punjab (who can forget the dhai kilo ka haath in DAMINI and the locker room outburst in GHAYAL ) that essayed his legacy in Bollywood action in which Sunny Deol didn't just play the role of an action hero, he reinvented them.
Though it may be easy these days for some people to poke fun at Sunny Deol, his movie resume speaks for itself. The evergreen action hero is set to seize the reins of the box office with his new age version of his immensely loved iconic 1990 action drama GHAYAL called GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN, bringing Ajay Mehra back to the helm, the normally shy and media aloof Sunny Deol speaks at length on the emerging trends, his belief and his future course of ‘action'.
Here are some excerpts from the interview:
3 D posters, selfies. You are changing with times.. how is the change treating you?
Trying. Very trying, but am enjoying it. It's a requirement nowadays. You need to reach out. We all have toiled so much for the film and if we don't reach out, my film will be cursing me by saying, “Why did you create me when you didn't want to promote me properly”.
Considering your back problem isn't it more stressful
My back problem will be there and I have to live with it. Previously I used to fight it but now I have accepted it. But that doesn't stop me from achieving what I want.
What is your secret behind being so fit at 56?
There is no secret. I don't think about my age and decide my routine. I work out, play badminton, squash with youngsters, sometimes they beat me or I beat them. If I start doing things thinking about my age then automatically brakes will get applied.
You said promotions are necessary to pull crowds, but people always say content is the king. What is your viewpoint on that?
Content will always remain the king. But in today's times, unless people hear from everywhere, they don't feel that things are happening. Creating buzz has become a routine, part of our daily diet and we are habitual of eating it every day.
'People blame Bollywood for creating unnecessary drama in the world, but there is more drama outside'
As a filmmaker-actor it is a necessity but personally what you feel about this change?
It's a crazy routine. Everybody is keen to express and everybody is a dramaebaaz. So much of drama nowadays in media. Everybody has a breaking news – here and there. People blame Bollywood for creating unnecessary drama in the world. There is more drama outside Bollywood nowadays and great actors in those politicians. (Has a hearty laugh)
What was the need to make a comeback with GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN?
I wanted to do GHAYAL again. Was planning for so many years but it was not happening. I was upset with all the previous developments and wasn't getting what I wanted. So I decided to write and direct on my own.
How does GHAYAL ONCE AGAIN adapt to current situation and what changes do Ajay Mehra's character undergo?
The theme is the same. Ajay Mehra has matured from a twenty year old youngster to a middle age man. After finishing off his life sentence, Ajay has started a newspaper called Satyakam and he is not vulnerable. He plans his moves.
