Anahoni ko honi kar de honi ko anahoni…
This super hit song from Amitabh Bachchan starrer AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY suits to a perfect ‘T' to define the genius of filmmaker Manmohan Desai, who could truly create anything weird on screen and yet end up winning laurels! Remember the famous blood donation scene in AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY, where three brothers are shown donating blood to their mother through three separate tubes! An exceptional ‘medical invention' that only Manmohan Desai was specialist!
And that's not all what makes Manmohan Desai a genius is that from the 20 films that he directed in his 29 years filmy career almost 13 were based on the oft repeated theme of ‘Lost and Formula' and all most all of them were super hit! Interestingly in 1977 he made four movies viz. AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY DHARAMVEER, CHACHA BHATIJA and PARVARISH all based on ‘Lost and Found' subject and surprisingly all hit the jackpot at the box office.
In fact AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY broke all box office records as it celebrated Silver Jubilee (25 week consecutive run of daily three shows) in Mumbai's 9 cinema halls. A record not attended even by SHOLAY, MUGHAL-E-AZAM or any film of superstar Rajesh Khanna's films during his stardom regime!
Another surprising feature of AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY and Manmohan Desai's brilliance is that for the first time in AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY Desai exploited the comical element in Amiatbh Bachchan to the hilt!
Further during the 70's when Bachchan was known as the action hero, Desai did the reverse and depicted the villain (Remember Praveen Babi's bodyguard Zebisko) thrashing Bachchan after the song My name Is Anthony Gonsalves…! In another scene he showed Vinod Khanna beating Bachchan.
Initially many cautioned Desai, including Amitabh Bachchan, but Desai was master of his craft he knew what he was doing and as expected Desai's gamble paid off and the audience went into peals of laughter watching Bachchan beaten!
What ZANJEER, DEEWAAR and KABHI KABHIE could not do for Amitabh Bachchan, AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY did! The movie fetched him his first Best Actor Filmfare award!!
It's reported after AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY Amitabh Bachchan never heard the script of Manmohan Desai's films and blindly singed on dotted lines! He worked with Desai in all his films till his demise. Together out of Desai's 20 films Amitabh Bachchan worked in 10 films!
Desai's penchant for ‘Lost and Formula' began after series of failures like BUDTAMEEZ, BLUFF MASTER in the 60's with Rajesh Khanna starrer SACHCHA JHOOTHA (1971) a poignant tale depicting the separation of a brother from his handicap sister. The movie not only fetched Khanna a Filmfare award but also gave Desai the magical mantra of success.
Today more than a decade has passed since Desai bid adieu from this world but his patent formula of masala entertainers packed with right dose of music, dance, action, melodrama, a pinch of patriotism and lot of razzmatazz continue to inspire filmmakers of even today.
Filmmakers like Farha Khan, Rohit Shetty and others continue to mint gold at box office harnessing Desai's style of film making because, though it may be illogical, but it captures the pulse and popular taste of the common man!
Glamsham.com salutes the movie maverick Manmohan Desai on his 79 birth anniversary!
