While the Ad Guru, writer, National Award winner, Padma Shri Award winner, Prasoon Joshi may have penned the lyrics for many interesting & beautiful films and even turned a script-dialogue-screenplay writer for BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG, his repertoire of work would stay incomplete without RANG DE BASANTI. Though each work of his is nothing less than a tour de force, RANG DE BASANTI stands to be a milestone in his career (as writer).

While the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra helmed film had created frenzy across the nation, its songs were also a rage that sort of moved everyone. And till date the songs pierce our hearts, evoke a feeling of doing something heroic for our motherland and remind us how much we truly love our country India. In fact every single line has the power to give you goosebumps. And you can't thank enough for it to Prasoon for coming up with awe-inspiring lyrics.

As Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's pop patriotic RANG DE BASANTI (RDB) that had brought together a superlative team - comprising of actor Aamir Khan, filmmaker Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, music composer A R Rahman and lyricist Prasoon Joshi for the first time, completed 10 years on 26th January 2016, Prasoon disclosed some amazing facts behind these songs that probably you weren't aware of. Here it is:

Atal Bihari Vajpayee loved the lyrics of RDB: “Every song of RDB is special whether ‘Khoon Chala', ‘Ru-Ba-Ru', which is an intense poetry. But there is this specific line in ‘Ru-Ba-Ru' song - Suraj Ko Mai Nighal Gaya that Atal ji loved it. When we showed the film to Atal ji, who was the PM that time, he just praised the lines and expressed ‘Waah Aapne Kitna Accha Likha Haii Suraj Ko Mai Nighal Gaya…' Being the poet himself he could understand the spirit of the song. He really liked the song.”

How people went crazy for ‘Ru Ba Ru': “When I went to a store in Bandra to buy a shirt the salespeople said we want to gift you a shirt, when I asked why? They replied, ‘we open the store in the morning and sing ‘Ru Ba Ru' together every day. I think that song impacted the people a lot…”

When nobody understood ‘Paathshaala' song:‘Apni Toh Paathshala' was again a great song. A R Rahman and Rakyesh said that nobody will understand the song. In fact everyone associated with the film showed their doubt for the song. But I kept humming it and eventually it was used.”

How Ziddi Rahman turned into Ziddi Armaan in ‘Khalbali' song: “There is a line in ‘Khalbali' called ‘ziddi ziddi hai armaan'. Interestingly, 'ziddi' word was not there initially and something else was there. I was humming and singing it. So Rahman said ‘It's not sounding clear.' When I had called him, he said ‘Prasoon it's not sounding right.' So, I jokingly said ‘ziddi ziddi rahman' and he at once responded ‘Arey! that's what it is rahman nahi ziddi armaan!' So that's how ‘ziddi rahman' became ‘ziddi armaan'.”

‘Khoon Chala' song was widely used by public:‘Khoon Chala' was a song which used to be played at the candle march and after the Jessica Lal case, every news channel used to play it.”

‘Lukka Chuppi' was Prasoon's second song with Lata Mangeshkar:‘Lukka Chuppi' was my second song with Lata Mangeshkar. My first song in the film industry was with Lataji in the film called LAJJA. When I started out, it was the film called LAJJA. This was second song beautiful jugalabandi with Lata ji and A R Rahman.”

Prasoon rewrote ‘Sarfaroshi ki Tammna': I rewrote ‘Sarfaroshi ki Tammna'. I used one line and rewrote the entire song. It was a big challenge since I had to portray the true essence of a revolutionary. If you read the lyrics, you will find that I have kind of transported myself in that era and wrote like the revolutionaries used to write.”
