Shabana Azmi wants Shah Rukh Khan to do more for women
January 9, 2016 9:14:14 AM IST By Shaheen Irani, Glamsham Editorial
Shah Rukh Khan has time and again proved that he respects women the most in his life. But Shabana Azmi still think the superstar has something more to do for these women.
Wait, wait. Hold your horses. Shabana Azmi generally feels that the Bollywood actors (including SRK) should encourage more and more women-centric films, and at least once be a part of the project (in an important but not the lead role).
During CHALK N DUSTER promotions, we asked the actress what does she think about pay gap issue in spite of women-centric movies gaining momentum and she said, ''Firstly, I have different views on pay gap. Films are becoming unviable today. That's because actors are charging so much. Even if they're not directly taking the money, they take so much of the profit that ultimately the producer spends 200 crores and makes 8 crores at the end of the day. That's why it's not viable, which is why I think we all have to rework on our prices. You can't kill the goose that lays the golden egg. The reason why there is so much disparity between male and female centric films is because (even though it's unfair) but it's the male star who brings the distributor in and determines the price of a film. Today's younger male stars are aware that this disparity needs to be bridged.''
''Shah Rukh Khan made a gesture and put Deepika's name before his own. I would urge them to do a little more than that - which would be basically to encourage women centric films. Male superstars should agree to be in a film where a female has a bigger role than them at least once. There are a lot of movies where male stars have very important female stars in secondary roles. Why can't it also be reversed for equal pay? If you can develop this sensitivity in them, then that will become a way of seeing that some parity happening in pay scales,'' concluded the actress.
