Film legend V. Shantaram was known for making social film that were hard-hitting statements on special issues. Besides strong subjects Shantaram had a great sense of music. Hence, all his films that he made had good music like DO AANKHEN BARAH HAATH (Remember the hit spiritual song 'Aye Malik Tere Bande Hum'…), JHANAK JHANAK PAYAL BAJE, NAVRANG etc. In fact, his all time classic PINJRA (Marathi) was a musical masterpiece.

However a close look at the music of his films reveals an interesting aspect. Any guesses?
Well in his career that ranged from 30s till the late 70s he used all the topnotch singers of Bollywood like Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar, Mukesh, Mahendra Kapoor etc. but only once in his entire career he opted for Mohd. Rafi for his film SEHRA (1963).
Incidentally, Shantaram was asked this same question, once by a leading film journalist. He said, ''I have been a great admirer of Mohd Rafi but somehow I never got a script that could do justice to Rafi Sahab's majestic voice.''
''But when I started my film SEHRA, which was a rough adaption of William Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet', I approached, Rafi Sahab, because SHERA was a musical love story and music was the cornerstone of the film. Hence, Rafi sahab was the natural choice and he lived up to his reputation!''
Readers who are music buff may remember the super hit song ‘Taqdeer Ka Fasana Ja Kar Kise Sunae...'
The movie had about six songs and each song is a rare gem. Other hit songs of the film include 'Tum To Pyar Ho Sajni....; Mast Nazar Ki Katar ...'
As the move lacked popular star cast hence it opened to a lukewarm response at the box-office but thanks to the movie's excellent songs, within a week, the movie was a runway hit and is still remembered as V. Shantaram's career's most successful musical hit.
