Never in his wildest dreams would international fame actor Irrfan have dreamt that megastar Rajnikanth's dubbed KABALI was going to be too hot for him to handle, and overpower his latest release MADAARI. However we had a sneaking suspicion about that and mentioned the same in our last box-office report.

KABALI, MADAARI AND SULTAN

Coming to the details, while Irrfan Khan's Nishikant Kamat directed MADAARI opened at 5-10 percent start, Rajnikanth's KABALI (dubbed) saw 15-25 percent occupancy on an average. As things stand, MADAARI faces an uphill task at the box-office, despite a noticeable pick up during the latter shows at some ‘A' centre multiplexes.

While still on the Rajnikanth starrer, a big surprise is the fact that the original version of KABALI saw a cent-per-cent occupancy (limited screenings) even in places like Bombay, Pune and Calcutta. A place like Delhi too saw jam packed houses for a couple of shows of the original version, which consolidates the fact that Rajnikanth is a pan India star and the biggest commercially successful actor from south, over the decades, if we check the archives, ANDHA KANOON onwards.. And we are not even talking about the astounding (but obvious) performance of KABALI down south.

In the overseas, KABALI (Telugu and Tamil) has also scorched the North American charts, grossing an astounding $1.9m (at number 3 in the charts), from just the Thursday previews. Amazing to say the least, as it is a figure not many (in fact almost 90 percent) Indian films fail reach even in the end count !

Meanwhile, last week's Indra Kumar directed Vivek, Riteish, Aftab and Urvashi starrer, GREAT GRAND MASTI, faced outright rejection from the audience netting 12-13 crore during its opening week from India.

Concluding with Yash Raj Films' Salman, Anushka and Randeep starrer SULTAN, the film added another 49-50 crore during its latest run, thus netting 279-280 crore in two weeks (16-days to be precise) from India. With 50 crore already in by way of satellite rights (Sony), SULTAN is an all time blockbuster which should hit the 300 crore mark during the next couple of weeks.

In the overseas too, SULTAN continues its blockbuster run approaching the $22m mark, with $5.6m from the US.
