No need to wait till weekend to enter the sought-after 100 crore club. In coming years movies starring superstars Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan can enter the 100 crore club on Friday itself. Read it how it can happen.

Mr. P.V. Sunil director and CEO of Carnival Cinemas in a candid conversation spills some beans on the growing market potential in the exhibition market that may swell the revenues at box office in multiples.

Citing the example of Salman Khan's BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN, the top executive of India's third largest theater chain after PVR and Inox says, “According to our observation based on the example of BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN which did a business of around 320 crores amounting to 3.2 crore people coming to theatres to watch this film from a population of around 130 crores, which means around 2% of the population had actually gone to theatres to watch the film. Imagine the scenario if we increase the footfalls from two percent to five percent and then to ten percent in coming years.”.

Adding further Mr. Sunil shares, “Around 50 crores of Indian population don't even have access to theatres. People travel miles to watch their heroes on screen. For a nation that produces the most number of films (around 1450) per year, this is a humongous untapped virgin market waiting to be explored. A retail survey states that the retail market is shifting towards tier two cities (small towns, satellite towns) like Cochin. Today Cochin has the largest mall in the country, its not tier 2 anymore. The definitions are changing. And this is when Carnival steps in.”.

Carnival Cinemas that started with a three screen property in 2011 is currently running its operations in 324 screens across 118 properties in 88 cities and has set a goal of 1,000 screens by 2018.

Elaborating further Mr. Sunil says “ Things are changing and the upsurge in retail is bound to happen provided we give the opportunity. A movie like CAPTAIN AMERICA is finding audience in small cities, A nation which was not habitual to watch Hollywood movies is lapping its popular franchises due to access and availability of infrastructure. Similarly, if we double the screen count for A –List releases, the economy is going to change tremendously. Things which seem to be small is no longer small and vice versa for things which seem to be big.”.

Mr. Sunil has a point, life of movies in theaters is getting shorter and by this upsurge resulting in screen count getting multiplied from 4,000 to 8,000 to 12000 in coming years, Bollywood's biggest openers on Holidays like SRK's HAPPY NEW YEAR (44.97 crores) or PREM RATAN DHAN PAYO (40.35 Cr) in future can expect an entry in the century (100) crore club on day one itself.
