Amidst Himesh Reshammiya's stellar presence and his stylish comeback on-screen, we also witnessed singer and actress Monica Dogra in the lately released film TERAA SURROOR. Monica Dogra? The name will ring a bell when we reveal you that she was part of films like DHOBI GHAT, ROCK ON, DAVID, FIREFLIES.
Though she wasn't the lead in TERAA SURROOR, Monica played an integral part in the film. Monica played a lawyer, who has the courage to take on a hopeless case for the protagonist of the film, played by Himesh. The love of his life has been put in jail, and she attempts to help him get her out. As we engaged in a brief conversation with the multi-faceted personality Monica, she spoke about making sporadic appearances in films, why she took up TERAA SURROOR, whose sensibility appeals to her, why she calls Bobby Deol a stud and much more...
Here are the excerpts:
You have been very selective about your roles and films. Any specific reason
I've always had my music career going strong. I have just followed my gut and what inspires me at any given moment in time. I'm lucky to be an artist who creates her own content and material.
What really motivated you to take up TERAA SURROOR? More so, knowing it was an out and out Himesh Reshammiya film?
I had an interest in doing something I had never done before. I don't listen to other people's thoughts or opinions about me, my work, or my career anymore. I used to. I met Himesh, he was familiar with my work as an independent, and seemed to be very systematic in the mainstream space. It's a world I had never really communicated with as an artist. I thought this could be my first dabble with that world. Hopefully, it will not be my last. I am interested in accessing and communicating with a larger audience. As we all know, Bollywood has a very specific voice when it comes to mainstream film. It's something worth examining, for me at least. I want to understand it better, because it hasn't changed much over the years, and it looks like it's not going to.
Did you croon any number in TERAA SURROOR?
No I have not.
Are you a fan of Himesh Reshammiya's style of music and songs?
I am not a consumer of too much mainstream music or film in India, quite frankly.
How do you take acting? Are you as much passionate about acting as you are for singing?
"Bobby Deol is a stud. I think the world has missed him"
I am passionate about making art. That includes, writing, acting, singing, and dancing. I think they all inform each other and are completely intertwined.
In Bollywood, who do you think is on the same page with you? With whom you think you share a common sensibility or whose sensibility appeals to you?
That's an interesting question! I am not sure. I suppose I really like people's work like Lisa Haydon, Kalki Koechlin, and Aditya Roy Kapoor.
Are you averse to doing any particular type of role?
If you had asked me this a year ago, my answer would have been completely different. But, no, I'm not averse. I actually am really excited to explore unchartered territory.
Who are you looking forward to work with in Bollywood?
I'd love to work with Anurag Kashyap.
Tell us about your other projects - film with Bobby Deol?
CHANGEZ is a dark, action, thriller. We are still in pre-production at this time. It's a very exciting script! The director, Vivek Chauhan, is truly an artist with incredible instincts as a filmmaker. Bobby Deol is a stud. I think the world has missed him, and will be excited to see him back in this avatar.
