Vicky, Deepal, Rajeev, Himesh!

International's Women's Day has come and gone but pink seems to be the flavor on the lips of heroes on screen.

In ZUBAAN, two weeks ago, actor Vicky Kaushal decided to go pink. His lips were plastered with pink lipstick topped with dollops of lip-gloss making him look more feminine than male. Thankfully, his performance overshadowed the enthusiasm of his make-up artist and it was his acting that caught the eye and not his lips. Nevertheless, he will have to go easy on the lipstick and lip-gloss in his next flick.

A few years ago, in my review of A WEDNESDAY I had pointed the garish make-up of Deepal Shaw. This is what I had written: “Deepal Shaw does not have much of a role but manages to make an impact as a television journalist hungry for scoops. The only sore point here is her make-up, which is pathetic.”

She called a few weeks later to thank me. “I have begun to take care of my make-up. Thank you very much for your constructive criticism,” she said.

After TABLE NO 21, the first flick of the year 2013, I met Rajeev Khandelwal at a private screening and asked him why he liked to look like a girl on screen with pancaked make-up. He took my view on his chin, smiled and said that he knew it was a sore point and was “working on it.” “I looked horrible,” he added.

Himeshbhai, hopefully, in your next film, you will not empty the whole pink lip cartridge!

Vicky Kaushal again!
Sorry Vicky Kaushal for dragging you here as well. Towards the end, you will know why you are here.

Sooraj Pancholi debuted last year with HERO, a dud of a film. He won a few awards for that. I really don't know what was it for and on what basis he qualified for those awards, but I guess the jury knows best.

VICKY STORMED THE INDUSTRY LAST YEAR WITH HIS ACT IN MASAAN
VICKY STORMED THE INDUSTRY LAST YEAR WITH HIS ACT IN MASAAN

I believe he got another award in Dubai recently, (what really????) and he feels bad that his co-star Athiya Shetty did not get any. “Athiya Shetty also deserved a few awards,” he is quoted in an interview today. Notice the word few! Whew! Which category did you want Athiya to get awards in, Sooraj?

Was it Best Actress, Best Debut, Best Acting, Best Body Language, Best Dialogue Delivery, Best Walk, Best Smile, Best Emotion…. Or did you have some other category in mind?

Awards have truly become a joke. You can hear half the industry snigger, “Bollywood film awards are the biggest scam ever known.”

So Vicky Kaushal, here is why I got you in here. You deserved the Best Debut (Male) Award for your performance in MASAAN. Don't believe me? Ask the industry, they will furiously nod their head in agreement.

Jha, Prakash, Jha!
Prakash Jha made his full-fledged debut in JAI GANGAJAAL last week. I would not like to believe that it was budget constraints that had him play the corrupt cop Bhola Nath Singh. Probably, it was his ‘I can act too' belief that got him to face his own camera.

BEST DEBUT MALE???
BEST DEBUT MALE???

Jha performed in a one-dimensional manner: no layers, no emotions. He had just one look, like Himeshbhai, plastered on his face. Even when he turned to playing the good cop, he kept giving those same emotions with his eyes. His body language too was not what you see of a good actor.

Ok, I understand that he is a director and need not be a good actor. But when a director decides to act, he better be good, or he will end up making a joke of himself like Farah Khan did in SHIRIN FARHAD KI TOH NIKAL PADI and Karan Johar did in BOMBAY VELVET.

Look at Tigmanshu Dhulia, what a wonderful director, what a marvelous actor. He enacts every scene to his cast when he is directing a movie; he just does not call out “action”. He is that involved.

Then look at Farhan Akhtar. He made a splash as a director in DIL CHAHTA HAI, and then went to ROCK ON… literally.

A genuine all-rounder of our film industry!
