Legendary playback singer Mubarak Begum battles for life but Bollywood has no time to spare for her

Kabhi tanhaiyon mein yu humari yaad aayegi (Whenever in loneliness you shall remember me…). This super hit song that immortalized legendary singer Mubarak Begum in the annals of Indian film music, today ironically, lingers in the air but it a tragedy that while the veteran singer lies bedridden ‘tanha' (lonely) battling to survive in a municipal hospital in Mumbai, there is nobody to remember her.

MUBARAK BEGUM

Forget her patrons, her fans, what is most agonizing is that even the film industry has no time to spare for her and share her sorrow.

The eminent singer once ruled the roost in the 50' and 60' and had the pleasure of working with celebrated music directors like S D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan, Khayyam etc. Her movies stared superstars like Dilip Kumar, Rajendra Kumar, Vjantimala, Nargis to name a few. During the Golden era she gave multiple chartbuster songs like ‘Mujh ko apne gale lagaa lo aye mere hamraahi…. (HAMRAHI), Hum haal-e-dil sunayenge suniye ki na suniye … (MADHUMATI) and of course the timeless classic Kabhi Tanhaiyon Mein Yun Hamari Yaad Aayegi…( HAMARI YAAD AAYEGI).

However towards the 70's she went into oblivion as her conventional voice did suited the contemporary music. Whatever little money she had saved for her dotage was spent in the treatment of her daughter but alas she could not save her daughter. She was bankrupt. Her only son, too, could not find a suitable job and made a living driving auto rickshaw.

Once a glittering star, Begum has been reduced to penury. Thanks to Maharashtra government's support she is being treated at BSES Municipal General Hospital in Andheri. The government has also allotted her a small house (10 X 8 feet) in Mumbai's Jogeshwari area.

However the singer mourns the ‘indifferent' attitude of the film industry. Barring a few like Salman Khan and Lata Mangeshkar none from the film industry cares to bother about the legendary singer, who was once the pride of Bollywood.

It is rightly said the glittering world of film industry only dazzles from outside but from inside it is hallow, emotionless and heartless. It is indeed unfortunate that the film industry metes out step motherly treatment to its legends. The film industry must remember that the legends are the cornerstone of the multi-billion film industry, which they have built brick by brick by their hard work, sweat and blood.

Further the younger generation must realize that a few decades later they too would turn grey and join the league of legends. Hence if they wish to be revered ‘Then' than they better start respecting the legends ‘Now'! For remember the English axiom- ‘As you sow so shall you reap'.

Glamsham.Com hopes, at least, this article stirs the film industry and they reach out some assistance to the ailing Mubarak Begum.
