In media we say – every bit counts and Aamir Khan's DANGAL presented by Disney is a befitting example of this age old adage that hails the power of the fourth estate.

Not many are aware of this fact that the inspiration behind the idea of DANGAL was a small article about Mahavir Singh Phogat in a leading newspaper in 2012.

According to a source close to the production house, The small piece in a daily on Mahavir Singh Phogat's decision to train his two daughters in wrestling, a game which is commonly perceived as a man's sport across the country, and even more so in a state like Haryana!, caught the attention of one of Disney's creative executives Divya Rao, and inspired her to imagine a movie about the Phogats.

When Rao pitched the story to Siddharth Roy Kapur and other members of the Disney team, they instantly agreed to tell it on the big screen. Now came the bigger challenge, the inspirational story that celebrated women empowerment needed a trusted shoulder on which the biographical can rest and also the actor who can rightly, thoroughly and convincingly portray the character of Mahavir Singh Phogat that travels with age.

The source reveals that after significant brainstorming, the name of Nitesh Tiwari (co director of CHILLAR PARTY) was finalized and the writer director wasted no time and met Mahavir Singh Phogat and his wrestler-daughters in Haryana.

Mahavir Singh Phogat and his family agreed for a film on their life and having their approval Nitesh penned a script and gave it to Disney. Disney approached Aamir Khan to essay Mahavir Singh's character and the actor who is known to take his own sweet time in giving screen signal to any project, gave his nod after the narration from Nitesh without much delay and the rest is history.

As an input, Aamir reportedly suggested to shoot his older version first in which he has put on quite a lot of weight and then after taking a break of around five months get back in the shape to shoot for his younger version of Mahavir Singh Phogat so that he can remain in his original shape.

The trailer is out and all are loving it. It seems the hard work will pay off well and its really inspirational to find a potential good cinema getting inspired from a small piece of article in a daily.

DANGAL also stars Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, the movie is slated for on December 23, 2016.
