The reported closure of Disney India's production division after the epic debacle of MOHENJO DARO, had triggered the debate of Bollywood going through crises. While the official announcement by Disney India on Siddharth Roy Kapur's exit and closing of movie production in India is expected soon.
The opinion is divided on the current situation being just a phase or it's time for corporates to pack their bags. Market rumours on Balaji likely to close its film production by next year, is gaining momentum.
According to trade buzz, the slow down on Balaji motion pictures in their movie production with the series of back-to-back disappointments starting with KYAA KOOL HAI HUM 3, AZHAR, UDTA PUNJAB, GREAT GRAND MASTI and the latest dud A FLYING JATT, things are getting scarier in the trade circuits regarding Balaji's future in film production.
Balaji Group CEO Sameer Nair's recent declaration on concentrating on TV and digital content in future, keeping a halt on calls for future film productions hints towards a possible hold on film production.
A veteran from the film trade on condition of anonymity says that the closure of Balaji Motion Pictures film production cannot be ruled out, going by the recent losses occurred. Similar to the performance of Disney India with back-to-back debacles starting from KATTI BATTI, PHANTOM, TAMASHA, FITOOR and MOHENJO DARO. The story seems to be the same. It won't be a surprise if Balaji stops producing films post HALF GIRLFREIND. It's been more than two years for Balaji to taste success after EK VILLIAN in June 2014.
The slate of Balaji for the remaining 2016 and 2017 as of now reads the sequel of Kamal Hassan's VISHWAROOPAM – VISHWAROOPAM II co–produced with Aascar Films which is said to be in post-production stage. And the probable release of the much delayed XXX by Ken Gosh, which is reportedly under filming stage. The Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer HALF GIRLFREIND by their trusted Mohit Suri is the only solo production of the company and their biggest bet.
VEERE DI WEDDING made jointly with Anil Kapoor Films starring Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor is last in the list.
With no addition to their production list, the market is sensing the closure but things in show business change every Friday. A lot depends on HALF GIRLFREIND if it achieves the desired success Balaji may announce a couple of projects or will it allow the rumours to come true. Hope not!
