The new release of the week, Taapsee Pannu's NAAM SHABANA, the prequel to BABY, saw a decent start of around 20 percent on an average. For a normal film it would have been termed as creditable, as it has a female protagonist essaying the lead, but then Akshay Kumar's short but super cameo was expected to turbo charge the opening day numbers, which did not quite happen, unfortunately.

Having said that, NAAM SHABANA did see a 5 crore plus opening day, predominantly because of Akshay's presence, and one expects the film to put up an inspired show during the coming weekend, as well as the week, which sees an additional holiday.

The other prominent release of the week, Rahul Bose's POORNA, saw limited patronage amongst select high end multiplex audience.

Meanwhile, last Friday's Anushka-Diljit venture, PHILLAURI ended the first week netting 22 crore (to be validated) from India. Given that the film was made at a cost of 21 crore , and has already managed 12 crore from satellite and music rights, the creditable Indian theatrical run, as also the reasonable $1.5m from the overseas ($350,000 from the US), is sure to make the film as well as its investors happy.

Concluding with the Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt starrer, BADRINATH KI DULHANIA, the film saw another solid week as it mopped up 11 crore, thus netting 112 crore in three weeks from India, thereby surpassing Akshay Kumar's JOLLY LLB 2.

The super hit (first of the year) BADRINATH KI DULHANIA is the second highest grosser of the year after Shah Rukh Khan's RAEES, and we are not even talking about the good overseas exploits of the film. An example of that is the film has touched the $2m mark, just from the US!
