The talented director Priyadarshan is conjuring up on his next film titled KYON KI, which is a serious love story starring Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead. The director of late has derived the distinction of being the uncrowned king of comedy with films like HERA PHERI, HULCHUL and HUNGAMA proving to be sensational hits. But Priyan (as he is fondly called) was the name behind such unforgettable films like GARDISH, VIRASAT and MUSKURAHAT, which were far- cries from his present 'fun-time' comic roller coasters. With KYON KI, Priyan will be back arching up another serious tale after a long time. The film also stars Jackie Shroff, Rimii and Om Puri in crucial roles.
Set against the backdrop of intense romance KYON KI is a tragic tale of two ordinary sane people's rebellion against the insane medical ethics and medical system as a whole.
Young and charming Anand (Salman Khan) is in love with Maya (Rimii), a cute bubbly girl. Maya too loves Anand but is always out to play some or the other prank on him. Anand and Maya are planning to marry and have a family but destiny has some other plans for them. Maya's prankish nature results in a freak accident in which she dies!! Unable to overcome the shock, Anand losses his mental balance. He is sent to a mental hospital... Here he becomes just another patient - patient no. 36.
Strict and old-fashioned Dr. Khurana (Om Puri) is the head of the hospital who believes that brutal forces and oppression is the only way to tackle insane patients. Where as Dr. Tanvi (Kareena Kapoor), the young petite daughter of Dr. Khurana, and Dr. Sunil (Jackie Shroff) do not approve of Dr. Khurana's inhuman attitude towards the patients. They feel that patients should be treated with compassion, not aggression!!
Anand retaliates against the strict hospital regime and rebels against the system. He breaks many rules leading to a series of bittersweet incidents. Doctor Tanvi takes up the case of Anand and treats him in her own compassionate ways. This brings her close to Anand and soon Anand regains his mental balance and gets completely cured. But during the course of this treatment, Tanvi loses her heart to Anand and he too reciprocates her feelings.
When Dr. Khurana comes to know about this, he is outraged. In order to separate the 'couple in love', he refuses to accept that Anand is cured and takes him to 'shock room' where Anand is given electrical shocks and transformed into 'vegetable'.
After TERE NAAM, Salman will again be seen portraying a traumatized lover. TERE NAAM was a huge hit which got Salman's performance praises galore. Throughout his career, Salman has always been the cheerful, boy-next-door adorable guy on-screen and the audiences have related to his screen image overwhelmingly, be it MAINE PYAR KIYA, SAAJAN, HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN or more recently HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM and PYAR KIYA TO DARNA KYA. KYON KI will showcase Salman as a dedicated lover yet again and whether he would be able to duplicate the success of his past hits remains to be seen. KYON KI will also be a vital project for the lovely Kareena Kapoor who has remained deprived of a major hit for a long time. Her past releases like FIDA, MAIN PREM KI DIWANI HOON crashed at the box-office while CHAMELI was just a critical acclaim. KYON KI might just prove to be a much desired whiff for her by breaking the string of flops that has persisted for quite sometime now
The film has been produced by Sunil Manchanda and Mukesh Talreja and made under the banner of Orion and Mad films. The dialogues for the film been written by Sanjay Chhel (writer-director of Khoobsurat starring Sanjay Dutt and Urmila Matondkar). The music has been provided by the talented Himesh Reshammiya and lyrics penned by Sameer.
The film will also mark Priyadarshan-Salman Khan workin' together for the first time. Considering that Priyan has met success in teaming up with other macho-men of Bollywood like Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty, it will be interesting to see how he presents Salman in the movie. Kareena has worked with Priyan in HULCHUL before, but she was lost in the huge starcast of the movie who stole most of the show, though the movie was a hit.
