Vipul Shah, the director of the soon-to-be released WAQT - the race against time, seems to have a penchant for selecting Gujarati plays as sources of stories for his films. Waqt is based on the Gujarati play, AAVJO VHALA FARI MALISHU. In fact Vipul's first Hindi film AANKHEN starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Arjun Rampal and Sushmita Sen was also based on a Gujarati play called AANDHALO PATO.
After a memorable stint as actor/director in Gujarati theatre, Vipul Shah turned to directing TV serials. His EK MAHAL HO SAPNON KA was the first bilingual serial on the small screen and completed 700 and 1000 episodes in Gujarati and Hindi respectively. His directorial debut in commercial cinema took off with a Gujarati film, DARIYU CHORU, which won 9 state awards including Best Film and Best Director. His first Hindi film AAKHEN, had none other than the formidable Amitabh Bachchan as the protagonist who masterminds a bank heist by three blind men. AANKHEN won critical acclalim as well as box office success.
WAQT - the race against time, is the first film to be produced under his own banner, BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE ENTERTAINERS, and stars Amitabh Bachchan with Shefali Shah and Akshay Kumar with Priyanka Chopra
Amitabh Bachchan is Ishwar. Indulgent and loving, his son is the apple of his eye, the salt of the earth. As a man bullied by his son, scolded by his wife, Mr. Bachchan infuses so much warmth and humour into this character, that you envy Aditya for having such a great and generous dad.
Shefali Shah is Sumi. Last seen as the redoubtable Mrs. Mhatre in Satya, Shefali makes a terrific comeback as the affectionate wife and mother who can call a spade a spade and is honest enough to admit that her son is a good-for-nothing spoilt brat.
Akshay Kumar is Aditya aka Adi. He thinks nothing about chartering a plane to go for a picnic. Work and responsibility are words he lothes. He lives life king-size with no thought to the future. Akshay is simply delightful as the spoilt but loveable Adi whose dream of stardom may turn to sawdust.
Priyanka Chopra is Pooja. She too comes from a rich home and is used to nothing but the best. But when adversity strikes, she displays rare character. Priyanka shows her true colours as the gutsy Pooja who will stick by her husband through good times and bad.
Ishwar (Amitabh Bachchan) and Sumi (Shefali Shah) both adore their only son, Aditya (Akshay Kumar), but with a difference. While Ishwar is totally blind to Adi's faults and indulges him; Sumi, well aware of her darling son's shortcomings is always cautioning her husband not to spoil Adi so much.
The Story
Having come up the hard way, Ishwar feels his son deserves nothing but the best and Adi shamelessly takes total advantage of his father's love for him.
As far as Ishwar is concerned, Adi can do no wrong and even when he elopes with the girl of his choice Pooja (Priyanka Chopra), the father forgives him readily.
Adi on his part has only one obsession - to become a star and is least interested in joining his father's successful toy business.
Everything is going smoothly for Adi... Pooja is going to have a baby... everybody is excited and happy... Adi is busy training for his contest... when suddenly catastrophe strikes.
Aditya is thrown out of his luxurious house and forced to stay in a shabby outhouse.
Adi is puzzled and consoles himself that his father is playing some kind of a cruel joke. But his hurt turns to fury when he realizes that Ishwar and Sumi have no intention of relenting... their doors are shut... they don't give a damn what happens to him...
Adi is desperate. There is no food to eat, no electricity... just bare walls and bare floors... and a pregnant and hungry Pooja...
It's a race against time...
For Adi. Will his hatred for his father spur him on?
For Ishwar. Will his will power to overcome all hurdles?
For Sumi. Will her faith win in the long run?
For Pooja. Will her love conquer all odds?
It's indeed a race against time!
