Admissions Open Movie Review

Education is in. And it is not just Aamir Khan who is endorsing it through films like '3 IDIOTS' and 'TAARE ZAMEEN PAR'. In fact not just too long ago, there was a small time film called 'Chal Chalein' that had explored similar theme by challenging the pressure that parents put on kids when it comes to 'topping' in their class. The Mithun Chakravorty starrer wasn't any great shakes mainly due to shoddy production values but it still was engaging to some extent at least. However, 'ADMISSIONS OPEN' doesn't even anywhere close to 'CHAL CHALEIN' which pretty much tells the (sorry) tale.

'ADMISSIONS OPEN' looks at an alternate system of education. Nothing wrong with that; after all in India last five years have actually seen some drastic measures being taken when it comes to grading system and subject options. But still, there is some level of discipline, standardisation and seriousness expected to be imbibed into students who are working towards making their future. Why make mockery of everything that has been well established and has it's own benefits? It's one thing to challenge the system and another to totally ignore those aspects that have indeed worked.

Sadly, 'ADMISSIONS OPEN' follows the latter path and eventually turns out to be one of those inconsequential films that come out of nowhere and (rightly) get lost in oblivion. There is no fluidity in narrative, no impression made in acting and no plot development that makes you even reasonably engrossed in the proceedings.

The film is told through the eyes of Ankur Khanna, the young actor who has been around for 4 years now. His most notable performance has come in 'Kabootar' which ironically has been making festival rounds but is yet to see a theatrical release. In this film too he aims at being all earnest but is let down by the story line and treatment that just doesn't excite enough. As someone who challenges the current education system, he does begin a revolution of sorts with a Professor (Anupam Kher) but the alternate system which is eventually built is nothing but a sham.

It is understandable that not everyone is required to know about Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology. There is certainly a world beyond that but then how generic is that world where bhaigiri or the art of seduction rules? Frankly, does one actually have to 'enrol' into such classes? And if this storyline was created to invoke humour then well, the entire purpose of making 'ADMISSIONS OPEN' is totally lost.

No wonder, Anupam Kher looks totally disinterested and distances himself from the proceedings after a while. The music (by Amit Trivedi) too follows the standard pattern and just doesn't work to create any high energy moments. Production values are shoddy while performances from most of the actors uniformly below average.

All in all a class that you certainly don't wish to enrol in.

Rating - 1/5
