Bachna Ae Haseeno Movie Review

There's Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Yaar and Thoda forgiveness ka magic in Yash Raj Film's BACHANA AE HASEENO, which has Ranbir Kapoor keeping the Kapoor flag flying high, successfully shouldering the film with the confidence in his abilities as a performer. For one just in his second outing and spoken more for his off-screen romantic liaisons, Ranbir comes up trumps as the lover boy looking for a quick roll in the hay.

The locations are picturesque, (Cameraman Sunil Patel gives a breathtaking canvass of the exotic locales of Switzerland), the colours vibrant and the music groovy. The storyline too is 'cool', if you go by the segment this film is targeted at -- the youth. However, the shift in time when Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) falls in love with three different girls, or rather experiments with two of them, Mahi (Minissha Lamba), Radhika (Bipasha Basu) and Gayatri (Deepika Padukone), has not been taken care of. There is almost a 12-year gap between the time he falls in love with Mahi and Gayatri and yet the only visible change is his hairstyle, just a slight shift in styling, and designer eyewear. He still dresses the same way. A little research into this area was needed. Also, while the first half breezes with director Siddharth Anand introducing the three relationships, the second half falls flat. A good 25 minutes could have been clipped off to ward off boredom.

First Crush: Raj is on a train in Switzerland along with his friends and it's the last day of their tour. He laments that he has not yet met any interesting girl. On the same train is Mahi with her friends who dreams of running into her lover boy like Simran and Raj in DILWALE DULHANIYA LE JAYEGE. Well, they do meet and the next you know she misses her train to Zurich. Raj, who is on the same train alights at the next station and comes to meet her. They then hike their way to Zurich on a scooter to catch the flight in time. In the interim period, Raj and Mahi fall in love but before she can board the flight, Mahi overhears Raj boasting to his friend about his 'conquest'.

Second Rush of Blood: It's almost five years now and Raj has moved into his own apartment in Mumbai. Next door lives Anuradha. One look at her and our hero is lattoo. They break the dividing wall to their flat and begin 'living in' as a couple. Raj is happy with the way things are going, while Radhika wants to legalise things; get married. Raj is in a fix; he tries in vain along with his friend Sachin's (Hiten Paintal) help but to no avail. Left with no option, he leaves for Australia the day he has to get married in court, leaving a shattered Anuradha weeping on her supposed wedding day.

Finally, Love finds its way: While on one of his 'outings' with a woman, Raj runs into Gayatri who is a taxi driver in Australia. After a few drives, he discovers that he is in love with her. He proposes marriage, she is not interested. Shattered, Raj decides to go back to India to ask forgiveness from Mahi and Radhika. Reason: Raj now knows exactly what they might have gone through when he behaved the way he did with them.

All's fine but Anand lingers too long on the forgiveness aspect lengthening the film unnecessarily. There was no need for a lavish wedding ceremony to help Raj seek forgiveness from Mahi. Also, where was the need for Raj to fly from India to Italy to follow Radhika like a puppy, being ridiculed by her every command?

Then you have Gayatri who has realized she loves Raj and wants to marry him. Too long... the movie ends with a whimper, when a bang was what was needed.
Too much footage has been given to Bipasha's character, especially when all Raj has to do is say "I'm Sorry". Yet, all three girls make an impact. Hiten Paintal as Raj's constant companion displays talent. Like they say, it's in the genes. Also putting in a powerful performance in a cameo is Kunal Kapoor. This is the first time he has put some life into his acting.

With TASHAN and THODA PYAAR MAGIC failing at the box office, looks like Yash Raj Films will have to rely on their Diwali cracker ROADSIDE ROMEO if this movie fails.

Ratings : 2.5/5
