So what is new here? Nothing really!
The same references to past movies; The same 'mera baap chor hai'
revenge story; The same inconsequential dance songs.
Farah Khan is a real 'Himmatwala'; she even has a 'Humshakal' in HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) sets up a team of his friends, most of who worked for his father, to enter a dance competition, the finals of which will be held in Dubai. All of them are bad dancers, but they have a goal in mind. The dance competition is just an excuse for them to execute a daring Diamond heist.
So why this robbery?
It so happened that Charlie's father was falsely implicated in a robbery to the tune of Rs 300 crores. Jackie Shroff who orchestrated the robbery not only robbed the diamonds from under Manohar's (Anupam Kher) nose, but also claimed the insurance on it. CHECK OUT: HAPPY NEW YEAR songs lyrics
Manohar was sent to jail. He appealed to the Supreme Court but his lawyers were bought over by Jackie. The case was shut. Charlie got the 'Mera baap chor hai tag'.
The dance competition in Dubai will also house the diamonds being brought in from South Africa for one night and Charlie has made plans to crack the safe in the five minutes that they will have at their disposal.
So he enlists the help of Jag (Sonu Sood), Nandu (Abhishek Bachchan), Tammy (Boman Irani) and Rohan (Vivaan Shah). Later on, in order to help them learn dance, they rope in Mohini (Deepika Padukone).
Now here are the strong points of those enlisted to execute this daring robbery:
Jag is a tough guy. Nandu is a look-alike of Jackie's son Vicky Grover. Tammy once worked with Manohar and is more a family member. He knows how to open a safe. Rohan is a hacker. His role is to ensure that their team gets the maximum number of votes in the competition in the India leg, and also do some hacking in Dubai to get to the safe. Charlie, of course is the brain. He has been waiting for this moment for eight years.
So we have six introductions. One for SRK, one for Sonu, One for Boman, One for Vivaan, two for Abhishek and one for Deepika. And mind you, all introductions are quite lengthy.
And in case you are not following the story, don't worry. Charlie narrates it time and again. And Farah also plays out the robbery on screen before the actual robbery can take place. So you don't really miss anything. It's no wonder the film clocks just a minute under three hours.
Now for the dialogues, Charlie whilst describing Mohini's moves describes it as 'breast-taking' and when she admonishes him for being late, he replies, ''I promise you Mohini, mein zindagi bhar nahi letunga.
To help you endure the movie, there are a few funny portions as well that do make you LOL. I personally loved the one where a Narendra Modi lookalike came on screen to say ''Acche din aagaye,
'' when the Indian team started performing well. CHECK OUT: HAPPY NEW YEAR Movie dialogues
There are also scenes with Boman Irani and Abhishek which are a riot.
Finally, you have this gem of a dialogue which sums up the state of the film: ''Olympic ke liye team, Ya Oscar ke liye film, India losers hi bhejte hain.''
Don't be surprised if this one too is nominated for the Oscars!
