Shekhar Suman makes his directorial debut with an adaption of the 2007 Hollywood flick, AWAKE.
The film focusses on 'Anesthesia Awareness' wherein a patient is fully awake, though paralyzed, when a surgery is taking place. However, he is unable to scream and express his pain. In this case, the protagonist is undergoing a heart transplant, when through his pain he overhears a plot that would change his life.
The production values for most part are top class with Shekhar giving the film a nice Hollywood feel. But it is when the film moves to Mumbai from Dubai that things change, technically and plot-wise.
The surgery aspect is handled with kid gloves and although there are moments that 'take you to the operation theatre', there are other scenes handled amateurishly. Like for instance when the new heart is being replaced and it is being displayed. Also, how the wife of the patient can enter an operation theatre remains a mystery! Aditya (Adhyayan Suman) is suffering from a rare heart disease and needs to undergo a transplant. Along with his mother Gayatri (Deepti Naval) he runs a business empire that has just gone global. While on a business trip to Dubai, he meets and falls in love with the receptionist Riya (Ariana Ayam). Aware that life is too short for him, he calls off the relationship. A few months later, unable to bear the separation, Riya comes to Mumbai in search of him.
A tough business woman and a strict disciplinarian, Gayatri is not too happy with her son's choice. Aditya has no option but to leave his house and take shelter in the house of his friend, Dr Sameer (Shekhar Suman). Incidentally, Aditya has chosen Dr Sameer over Dr Trehan (Om Puri), a reputed heart surgeon and Gayatri's close friend, to perform the operation.
Once Aditya realizes that he is fully awake and his chest is about to be sliced open, he tries to scream but is unable to convey his message. A few scenes here are handled well to get the viewer to feel the patient's trauma.
What follows a few scenes later, showing the medical fraternity in poor light, is way beyond imagination!
Adhyayan, after a hiatus of five years, returns to match his performance with that of JASHN. He handles his part with the subdued maturity it calls for. This lad does have talent. Ariana for her debut holds up her end well. Deepti Naval as the tycoon businesswoman is excellent.

Overall, Shekhar Suman does a good job, especially the first half, and later towards the end when the truth dawns on Aditya.
