Right from day one, the makers of HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA have been calling it a modern-day tribute to DILWALE DULHANIA LE JAYENGE. It’s actually more than a tribute. There are quite a few references to the Shahrukh Khan-Kajol starrer in HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA. Even the plot bears an uncanny resemblance to the 1995 film.
So, is it a worthy tribute? Well, for the most part of it, yes.
Ambala girl Kavya Pratap Singh (Alia Bhatt) sports a tattoo at the back of her neck which reads pataka. And she’s quite like one – vivacious and spunky. On her trip to Delhi, where she lands up to shop for her wedding outfit, she accidently meets the irresponsible and jugadu Humpty Sharma (Varun Dhawan). Humpty has the hots for Kavya and even helps in saving her friend’s marriage. As expected, they fall in love. But she eventually returns to Ambala for her impending marriage, fixed by her kabhi naram kabhi garam father Mr. Singh (Ashutosh Rana).
Most romantic movies are predictable and HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is no exception. But the way debutant director Shashank Khaitan takes you through it, is what makes it worthwhile. It’s a fun ride which makes you laugh and even go ‘aww’ in certain portions. However, some of the songs do hamper the film’s flow.
They say, all’s well that ends well. Sadly, in HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA, it doesn’t. The unconvincing climax doesn’t do justice to the otherwise good film and sticks out like a sore thumb. It seems the director ran out of ideas and took the most convenient path.
In a love story, the performances of your lead actors are vital, and they certainly don’t disappoint in this one. Varun is very effortlessly confident while Alia Bhatt delivers an excellent performance. The chemistry between them is quite palpable. Siddharth Shukla makes a fine big screen debut. Ashutosh Rana is good. A special mention to Gaurav Pandey and Sahil Vaid who play Varun’s friends in the film. They are terrific!
Barring the climax, HUMPTY SHARMA KI DULHANIA is a delightful film which shouldn’t be missed.
