By Kshama Rao

With Koi... Mil Gaya, director Rakesh Roshan has proved two things. One, he truly can give Hrithik Roshan a role to chew into and two, it takes guts and gumption to make a really ''different'' film within the commercials parameters of filmmaking.Sanjay Mehra (Rakesh Roshan) is a scientist who is trying to make a breakthrough - his aim is to establish that there is life on other planets and that it''s possible to reach them. For that, he has set up a computer, which transmits different sounds - Aum being one -- in different variations to space. One day he gets a response from the outer space but the scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation dismiss his findings as a big joke. When his pregnant wife Sonia (Rekha) and he are returning home, he sees a spaceship in the sky. Elated by the sight his car rams into something and Sanjay dies. His wife gives birth to a mentally challenged boy, Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) who she lives with in Kasauli. As years pass by, Rohit grows into a young man but mentally he is still a child. While Rohit lives a carefree life - that is when he is not bullied by the neighbourhood hero, Raj (Rajat Bedi) - with a group of small kids, his mother increasingly worries about this future. Enters Nisha (Preity Zinta) who after the initial hiccups befriends Rohit and becomes his ''girlfriend''. A couple of songs later, Rohit and Nisha one day come across the computer his father had created at his outhouse. Accidentally, they find out about the ''Aum'' signal and send it to the space. That night, a spaceship visits Kasauli leaving the entire town in disbelief. It''s then found out that some aliens from ''the other planet'' had come down and one of them has not gone back. Rohit and Nisha find it - an adorable three-feet high alien, which looks like a seagull - in the jungle and hide it in the outhouse. They call it Jaadu because it manages to make the "kachha" Rohit into a "pakka" young man. Which means, Rohit can now flex his bulging muscles, which develop overnight, can see without his glasses, dance like Michael Jackson and play basketball with Raj and his bullies. All''s fine till Kasauli''s police officer (Mukesh Rishi) finds out about Rohit''s little secret. He, with the help of the district collector (Prem Chopra), start tracking down the alien, so that they can hand it to the scientists for further investigations. Meanwhile, Rohit decides to call the spaceship back and send Jadoo back to his rightful place, the other planet. Rohit succeeds though in the bargain, he loses all the powers Jadoo has given him. But no sweat, what''s a good Hindi film without its happy ending... Koi... Mil Gaya is an immensely enjoyable film. Yes, there are people who may find it a copy of ET-meets-Forrest Gump but what the heck, it''s still a film that''s not been seen on the Indian screen before. The special effects may come across as child''s play and Jadoo may look like a small child disguised as an alien but it still manages to touch your heart.
The film gives many reasons to smile. First and foremost, it looks very fresh, including the freshly scrubbed Preity Zinta. The breathtaking locales of Nainital and Canada provide ample visual relief. The cinematography by Ravi Chandran and Sameer Arya is awesome. The music by Rajesh Roshan though not in the league of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai is still hummable, especially the title track and the superbly choreographed Idhar chala number. The dialogues by Javed Siddiqui (some of the lines actually bring a lump in the throat) and the screenplay (Sachin Bhowmick, Honey Irani, Robin Bhatt and Rakesh Roshan) too are above average.Last but not the least, Koi... Mil Gaya sees some wonderful performances by Rekha, Preity Zinta and Mukesh Rishi. And of course, Hrithik Roshan who lends his all to Rohit Mehra. It''s very obvious that Hrithik has enjoyed playing the mentally-challenged-boy-transformed into-your-regular-hero (in fact, the transformed Rohit reminds you of Raj of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai) immensely. He plays the character without any inhibitions and succeeds in involving you in his life. Your heart really goes out to Rohit Mehra. All said and done, Koi... Mil Gaya mein emotions bhi hai, romance bhi hai, drama bhi hai, action bhi hai and still it''s different. Kudos to the father-son jodi who may yet repeat history!.

   Viewer's Feedback

I have to admit that I was verry sceptical about going to watch this movie, esp after reading all the reviews. But after having seen it, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. The special effects were really excellent, and not at all like the typical Bollywood movies! Jadoo was the cutest, most adorable sci-fi character I've seen in movies! Hrithik's performance was commendable, and Preity was just gorgeous the entire movie! There were the usual cheesy/corny bits, but all in all, a glossy flick.

The film is not for person who don''t know much of english. Though its Hindi movie, you can easily find 30 % english words in the dialogs. Feels very irritating some time.
