This Margarita is flawed.

I mean, which director in his or her right mind would pick on such an interesting subject [Cerebral Palsy] and make a mockery out of it?

Look at how TAARE ZAMEEN PAR was treated. That's respecting Special Children and highlighting their plight in a humane manner.

Shonali Bose packs too many emotions into this movie, some unwarranted, which takes away any emotions one might have had as the movie began. Also, she is obsessed with showing Laila (Kalki Koechlin) who is suffering from Cerebral Palsy as this sex maniac!

Till the time we are introduced to Laila and her family and her life in college in New Delhi, things look real. Even when she tries to kiss and get close to a friend of hers Dhruv (Hussain Dalal) who suffers from the same ailment, it seems ok. But when she has the hots for her colleague who is normal, things gets distorted beyond belief. And when she goes in for a full-blown lesbian relationship whilst studying abroad and then has sex with her 'helper, Jared, who is assigned to help her type, it crosses absurdity.

We have been shown Laila standing on a few occasions, of course with help. Laila is also shown using the walker all by herself in the middle of the night and at times sitting on the beach with her lover Khanum (Sayani Gupta), who is visually challenged.

One needs to know that cerebral palsy weakens the muscles and coordination is a painful exercise. They tire out easily and will always collapse in a heap. Laila is also shown moving into her lover's apartment after her mother leaves for India, leaving her in the care of her care-taker.

Either the mother is nuts, or the care-taker is. The mother may be excused here because after Laila has settled into a university abroad, she ensures that the care-taker is there for her. But the moment she leaves, Laila asks her care-taker to stay in her apartment while she moves homes. The care-taker could have easily called her mother and apprised her of the situation. Laila is a special child you see, it is the duty of the care-taker to ensure she is taken care of.

Surely, the visually challenged Khanum could not have taken care of all of Laila's needs who is in need of an attendant 24x7. And how did Laila land in Jared's house without a care-taker for an assignment? Here he is pulling down her thongs to keep her on the potty and then puts her on the bed for an act of sex. He surely must be a demented guy!

Kalki does well for her part. But she was given a raw deal with respect to the script. Methinks she would have blasted the scene if she was fed the right story-line. But I guess given her propensity for being an 'open-minded' girl the script would have been tweaked to suit her in a normal role. And that would also explain why Bose never added the 'drooling' or the 'head falling' to one side angle. She made her up pretty as a picture!

But this is not a normal film, it is a special film highlighting Special Children who are differently-abled and they deserved better.
