"Mujhse Dosti Karoge" brings flashes of all the previous
films under Yash Chopra's prestigious banner, with the
surprise element seriously lacking.
The story is too simple for the audience's liking. Raj (Hrithik Roshan)
chats with childhood sweetheart Tina (Kareena Kapoor) via another
family friend, Pooja (Rani Mukherjee). Why? Good question.
Because Tina doesn't have a computer of her own. And so Raj
exchanges e-mails with Tina for 15 long years, having no idea that
it is actually Pooja who's chatting with him. By the time Raj
returns from London to unite with all of them here in Shimla,
Tina has even forgotten his name. But Pooja reminds Tina of Raj
and discloses that she has been e-mailing him on her behalf, for
all these years. Next, Raj romances Tina in front of Pooja but doesn't
find any similarities between Tina and the one he's been talking to
on his PC, from faraway London. But, by the time he realizes his mistake
that he is actually in love with Pooja, it is too late. The
elders had already fixed Raj's marriage with Tina.
Matters go out of hand, when Pooja prefers to keep mum about
the issue, thereby making Raj to fume in anger. The story
takes an interesting turn when Raj challenges Pooja to marry
someone else first, if she is not ready to marry him just
because of hurting Tina's feelings.
This gives room for a suitable groom for Pooja to come into the
picture. Enters Rohan Verma (who else than family man,
Uday Chopra), Raj's London friend, to woo Pooja.
No prizes for guessing who gets whom in the end.
It seems the former TV film critic, debutante director
Kunal Kohli has played it safe, repeating the time
and again, tested formula of all the ingredients of a
Chopra film. The same settings, atmosphereand the overall
look.
The script is borrowed from quite a few films one could
think of. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Mohabbatein, Dil To Pagal Hai,
Yaadein, K3G. Be it Hrithik running like Shah Rukh Khan with
a bag on his shoulder a la K3G, or Rani having shades of Kareena's
character in Yaadein or even her own self in KKHH. The end too,
is right out of DTPH.
A lot of unnecessary scenes go unedited. Moreover, the
film falters here and there technically too. Tina doesn't
even know once that Pooja has been mailing Raj for 15
long years, despite being the best of friends. And how on
earth can Tina not have a computer of her own inspite of
coming from a rich family, and thereby giving rise to such
a situation in the first place. And how come nobody notices
Raj's and Pooja's displeasure even in full public view?
You beg for answers to these, but to no avail. Overall,
the movie fails to make you shed a drop of tear, even in
the emotional scenes.
The cinematography is refreshing and the already popular
songs keep you relaxed, humming them. But the highlight
is the take-off on the hit numbers from past movies, which
lasts a full 10 minutes or so.
Of the cast, Hrithik Roshan is his usual self, displaying
his 'already-seen-before' acts of making faces and shaking
a leg or two in the dance numbers. Rani Mukherjee, as the
'introvert-sacrificing-kind' fits the bill. As
for Kareena Kapoor, her role is just an extension of her
character in K3G.
VERDICT: "Ji Haan. Aapse Dosti Karenge...Sirf Dosti. Pyar Nahin".
