Wedding bells are in the air. Dholaks playing everywhere.
"Monsoon Wedding mein aap sabhi ka swagat hai"
Welcome to the wedding of the season with Mira Nair's latest offering - Monsoon Wedding, after the controversial
films like Kamasutra and Fire, 1947 Earth and the outspoken, incomplete Water.
Monsoon wedding - the official Indian entry into many international film festivals has won the coveted Golden Lion award at the Venice Film Festival making Mira Nair the first Indian, the second Asian and the first woman
to win top honours in the 58-year-old festival's history.
The film casts Naseeruddin Shah, Lillete Dubey, Shefali Shetty, Vijay Raazn, and Vasundhara Das along with Parvin Dabas, Roshan Seth, Soni
Razdan, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tilotama Shome, Vijay Raaz, P.K Dubey, and Ishaan.
Monsoon Wedding was shot on a tight 30-day schedule with resources supplied by her family and friends from food supplies on the sets to the furniture, props and costumes, etc. Mira Nair spent
only a fortnight to rehearse before going live.
Monsoon Wedding is a story of five interweaving stories told in the four days and nights leading up to an intricate upper-class wedding. Individual stories show the different aspects of love, crossing
boundaries of class, continent and morality.
Naseer and Lilette, a well-to-do couple, are preparing for Aditi (Vasundhara Das) their only daughter's wedding with parties, decorations, and hordes of relatives
and lots of laughter.
The household's maid, the decorator, and Naseer's son all discover the myriad shades of love; while Naseer and Lilette themselves strengthen their own bonds too. However, Aditi is torn between her arranged match and her relationship with her married lover. In addition, Naseer's niece, Shefali Shetty, is the family rebel who has refrained from marriage for a career in writing and
she has repressed a dark secret for long.
As the uncles and aunts pour into the house for the wedding, Shefali finds she can no longer hide her secret anymore. How will
this affect the monsoon wedding?
Mira Nair's Monsoon Wedding links stories of far-flung family members, their servants, and secret lovers. As a Punjabi family in Delhi reunites for their daughter's wedding, love and conflict are sparked, and true confessions are exclaimed out even
on the way to the chantry.
Monsoon Wedding promises to be a more practical and sensible version of Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, watch it and decide
for yourself.
