It's one thing to write zany one-liners and make attractive promos with catchy punch lines for a TV channel and quite another to make a feature film. Ex-MTV/Channel V guy Shashanka Ghosh tries to be smart with his debut directorial venture called Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II. He says in the end credits that his film is a reaction to Bollywood and the films he's seen over the years. But then at least the films Bollywood or the various mainstream Hindi film directors Ghosh pays a tribute to, contributed significantly to Hindi cinema than this absolutely juvenile attempt called Waisa... who cares?
The story goes like this: Puneet (Arshad Warsi) is an advertising guy who's lost his elder brother who he never knew was part of the underworld. He's also broken up with his fiery girlfriend, a cop called Agni Sinha (Sandhya Mridul) who thinks a short crop, a permanent smirk on her face and a slightly androgynous look makes her 'cool'. Worse, he ends up saving the life of a gangster Vishnu (Prashant Narayanan, perhaps the only best part of the enterprise). Vishnu gives a flat to Puneet as token of gratitude and thus begins a friendship wherein the two get a taste of each other's lives. There is Ganpat Godhi (Anant Jog) or some such who's the city's dreaded underworld king and his rival Gangubai (Pratima) who are tying to be one up on each other. In the meanwhile, Puneet also has a secret desire to make a crore and go to Nainital and settle there with Agni. All that comes true in the climax but not before an excruciating two hours!
Barring a few stray punch lines and a couple of songs, Waisa Bhi Hota Hai is a film that in the process of lampooning Hindi films ends up with egg on its face! Next time, probably Ghosh should just go and make a typical Hindi film. Who knows he may just hit bull's eye. For what they say about when you can't beat them, join them!
