Ayan Mukerji overstays the 'time limit' in YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI
, which makes it an 'up-and-down' fare. At best, this movie could be described as moderate. In terms of concept, it is nothing short of ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA
At one point in time (towards the end) Ayan does not know what to do, so he gets the hero into his own home from the airport towards the end to prolong the matter. If Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor
) wanted to visit his home after coming to India after eight years, he could have done so at the beginning. This afterthought is an unwanted intrusion by way of screenplay. Forty minutes is too long if you wanted to captivate the audience, Ayan. Even Madhuri Dixit
's item number 'Ghaghra'
(at the start) looks forced.
Thankfully, the vivacity of Kalki Koechlin
and the sparkling chemistry between Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone
makes things bearable. Badmateez Dil
is the only track that has any punch. It's also well picturised. CHECK OUT: Will YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI surpass RACE 2?
Naina (Deepika Padukone) runs into Aditi (Kalki Koechlin) at a shopping mall. Both were school mates. While Naina is burdened by her books, she learns that Aditi is going on a trek with her other schoolmates Bunny and Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur). Naina too decides to make that trek to get away from her mundane life. The four have fun like any ordinary teenagers. While Avi is always on the lookout to impress other girls, Bunny is set in his ways. He does not want to get entangled in a relationship. He wants to travel the world and make the best of life. He has won a scholarship to go to the US where his dream as a cameraman will bear fruit.
Exposed to her school mates after many years, Naina, lets the 'real her' explode while on the trip. While Bunny goes off to the US after the trek, Naina, Aditi and Avi forge a strong bond.
Eight years later, Aditi is getting married and Bunny returns for her marriage. After the trek, this is the other segment that gets the four friends back together. Naina is now a doctor, while Avi has failed in his business. Bunny is on a whistle-stop visit on his way to Spain. But things take a turn when Bunny and Naina meet again.
While at heart this is a simple love story, Ayan fails to keep it at that. And this is where YJHD falls flat even though it had the fizz.
After a long time, Deepika Padukone manages to hold her own. As the sedate, studious girl, she is first rate. Later, when she continues her friendship on a platonic level with Bunny, even though she is longing for him, there is a lot of depth. Ranbir is his exuberant self, portraying the joys of youth with gay abandon. For the two to pull off a super performance tells a lot of their maturity, both as actors and as ordinary human beings. After all, it is not easy to get cozy on screen when your personal break-up has been national news. Kalki is spontaneous and lovable. She is this character who is hard on the outside, but on the inside has her values intact. Aditya Roy Kapur
and his brother Kunaal Roy Kapur too put up a good show.
This film does not have the chutzpah of a ROCKSTAR; neither does it have the simplicity of ROCKET SINGH: SALESMAN OF THE YEAR or WAKE UP SID. In short, Ranbir fans will be disappointed.
