Now that's one kahaani mein twist that not many saw coming. In the face-off of RANN v/s ISHQIYA, it was widely anticipated that former would have an edge over the latter at least on the opening day. Though a mind blowing opening was ruled out and an average occupancy was pretty much expected for both the films, it had seemed that from the acclaim, appreciation and acceptance standpoint, Ram Gopal Varma's urban outing RANN would grab more attention than Vishal Bharadwaj's rustic production ISHQIYA.

CHECK OUT: Ramu on AB Junior's absence in RANN

However, it was just the opposite and that too by a substantial margin. ISHQIYA has not just done far better than RANN and but also has continued to hold stable ground right through the second weekend. With superb reviews coming its way, the situation was only rosier for this Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi and Vidya Balan starrer. Believe it or not but the star ratings handed over to this directorial debut effort by Abhishek Chaubhey was, hold your breath, equivalent to what all time blockbuster 3 IDIOTS got last year. With an all around critical appreciation and good acceptance by masses, ISHQIYA has turned out to be a safe venture. No, we are not looking at a film which would go on to do 30/40/50 crores business but given the cost involved and its reach, ISHQIYA should be a good profit making venture for all.

As for RANN, it is a clear looser at the box office. Now that's indeed a pity because the film fetched Ram Gopal Varma his best reviews since the days of SARKAR. Yes, the film didn't break any new grounds in terms of 'exposing' the media per se but if watched in isolation as a dramatic thriller; it made for a captivating viewing. However, audience had clearly made up their mind not to give the film any chance whatsoever and just like last year's KURBAAN and ROCKET SINGH SALESMAN OF THE YEAR, RANN will go down in the annals of Indian cinema as an unfortunate box office disappointment
