Vishal was staying in the same hotel as he always does in Mussourie and in the same hotel that he always stays is this Room No. 303 and this is where he has written all his scripts including OMAKARA and the next film. It’s his favourite place. So being a regular at Mussourie he also knows Ruskin Bond. He spoke to Ruskin Bond and asked him for his permission to make THE BLUE UMBRELLA into a film.
Ruskin Bond had given an informal permission to Mahesh Arne and to his publishing company Rupa Publishing house for making the film BLUE UMBRELLA. And he told Vishal that you speak to my publishers Rupa people as they handle all my publishing work. Vishal also knew the senior person at the publishing and when he met him and after the pleasantries was over Vishal came straight to the point and asked him for the rights of the story BLUE UMBRELLA. The manager suddenly told him to hold the phone and shouted, "Hold the letter" to his secretary. And stopped her from sending the letter in the courier as even the courier was late by half an hour that day. The letter was meant for the other buyers in Mumbai. The Manager said its a fantastic coincidence, am sure this script belongs to you and asked him to take the script to make the film.
Not only that but Vishal Bhardwaj says he is obsessed with casting Pankaj Kapur, and has been looking for a role to cast him and finally with BLUE UMBRELLA he found a role that only Pankaj could have done justice to. In the same breath Vishal says that he feels that had Pankaj been born in America he would have got more appreciated as an actor.
