Been there, DON it again!

Farhan AkhtarSo Farhan Akhtar's DON opened up to a mixed response. The folks are coming out with contrast opinions on the film. While diehard Amitabh fans have instantly given their thumbs down, the loyal SRK fans have lapped up the movie with all the affection. The movie is no doubt stylish and slick, but gotta admit that falters on the content aspect. Only if the screenplay would have been a little airtight and also the dialogues (with some imitated from the original) a little crispier it would have been a totally different show.

But all said and done the movie has got two distinct highlights that arent being talked about so much. The first thing is that the movie has again resurrected Shahrukh's anti-hero credibilities. The DON played by SRK here is more sophisticated and wears designer clothes no doubt but he is incredibly ferocious at the same time. And Shahrukh brings out that ferocity with panache. Rarely has any actor been this vicious on screen at least in the last few years or so.

The anti-hero is what made Shahrukh an overnight sensation in Bollywood. DARR, BAZIGAR and ANJAAM all these movies have been etched in the public minds forever. It was good to see SRK push aside the candyfloss romantic hero tag, at least for a while. At least his hardcore fans must be surely regaling their hero's onscreen histrionics.

But he could have avoided the songs and dialogues from the original movie because in the context of the new packaging they seem to be plain imitations and nothing else. The screenplay could have been a little tighter; the audience would have loved the movie even more.

But still, a good effort all in all. The movie actually has a feel of a slick and sharp crime thriller, almost colliding with any like-wise Hollywood movie. But it's also a reminder of the fact that mere technical razzle-dazzle and plush locations are not sufficient to make an effective movie, content is the king!! Hope that Farhan will be even better next time!
