It's raining remakes and sequels on Bollywood Boulevard. The latest being Farhan Akhtar's DON, a film that evoked endless debates and garnered mixed reactions. Is Bollywood running out of scripts or should we view remakes as a challenge to live up to the original film?
Well remaking cult films is a daunting task since they are subject to inevitable comparisons. It sure takes a lot to remake a cult film, especially if it happens to be an Amitabh Bachchan starrer.
Incidentally David Dhawan is remaking the timeless classic AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY with the Khan brothers Salman, Arbaaz and Sohail in the roles of Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor respectively.
"I am okay with the concept of remakes. Remaking a film is tough though the idea behind it is not essentially to better the original film. I mean there are certain things that can be enhanced in terms if styling, visual effects, music, etc. while certain things cannot be bettered. It's just our way of paying a tribute to the original. So many youngsters have not seen DEVDAS and DON."
"It is definitely challenging to live up to everyone's expectations. I personally feel that one is more likely to lose than gain as far as remakes are concerned," opines Arbaaz Khan.
Dhawan's AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY has already generated huge hype. Arbaaz says it's just a proposed situation and things are yet to be finalized. "It's premature to talk about AAA since it is slated to go on floors next year. I have grown up watching such films and it's just our way of paying homage to the classic."
So how different is Dhawan's AAA and who's playing Arbaaz's love interest in the film? "I'm sure David will not completely adhere to the original story. He will change a few things in his own style. It's too early to reveal anything else right now," says Arbaaz.
His forthcoming films include Priyadarshan's BHAGAM BHAAG, Sanjay Gupta's SHOOTOUT AT LOKHANDWALA and WOODSTOCK VILLA and Ahmed Khan's FOOL & FINAL.
