2006 was the year when records tumbled practically every month.
With number of multicrore grossers making a splash at the box office at a consistent pace, it was a year when some serious calculations went into re-looking at the list of All Time Top Earners in Bollywood.
A list that was dominated by films like GADAR - EK PREM KATHA [70 crores], HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN [65 crores], DDLJ [58 crores], RAJA HINDUSTANI, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHAM [all 50 crores] amongst many others for ages has gone for a spin with the arrival of a dozen odd money spinners in 2006.
Sitting pretty at top now is DHOOM 2, the NETT GROSS of which reads an excess of 80 crore and is still counting. This is followed by LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI and GADAR - EK PREM KATHA, both of which are at an enviable 70 crores though the latter has a potential to exceed its total in a longer run.
At #4 and #5 are KRRISH and HUM AAPKE HAIN KAUN with 65 crores in collections to boast, though just like LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, KRRISH too can set sight for an improved total.
While DDLJ still finds a place soon after, arrival of films like FANAA [53 crores], RANG DE BASANTI [51 crores] and DON [50 crore +] means that all three 50 crore films [RAJA HINDUSTANI, KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI and KABHI KHUSHI KABHI GHAM] have been pushed way down the order.
All this is pretty remarkable because in comparison, 2005 had just two films that contributed in a major way - NO ENTRY [45 crores] and BUNTY AUR BABLI [35 crores].
