Next Friday will see multiple releases in the form of Shahid-Kareena's JAB WE MET, John-Ayesha's NO SMOKING, the starless MUMBAI SALSA and the animated BAL GANESH. From the four bunched releases, Imtiaz Ali's JAB WE MET is likely to be the front runner, thanks to the popular music and the 'in-headlines' lead pair of Shahid and Kareena. Anurag Kashyap's NO SMOKING may impress the critics but is not likely to make much of an impact outside select multiplexes. The animated BAL GANESH has more chances of success in the DVD circuit, rather than at the cinemas. The last release, MUMBAI SALSA, will not make an impact anywhere.

The inevitable fate of Vikram Bhatt's Zayed, Urmila, Aashish, Sanjay and Aftab starrer, SPEED, was obvious to one and all and the film was a non starter from day one. The opening varied from poor to weak and it will be out of the cinemas before it catches even a little speed. The movie will entail losses to all concerned.

As was expected, Yash Raj's Jaya, Rani, Konkona, Kunal and Abhishek (extended special appearance) starrer, LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG, failed to appeal to the audience. The Yash Raj project was decimated worldwide (barring UK, where the gap was not so pronounced) by T-Series' BHOOL BHULAIYAA. The week's numbers make the outcome obvious. In its opening week, the movie collected 2.47 crores from Bombay, 42.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 2.35 lakhs from Baroda, 6.50 lakhs from Rajkot, 2.65 lakhs from Jamnagar, 1.50 lakhs (gross) from Bhavnagar, 1.25 lakhs from Solapur, 3.60 lakhs from Nasik, 1.48 crores from Delhi city, 25.25 lakhs from Gurgaon, 9.80 lakhs from Faridabad, 22.75 lakhs from Noida, 8.50 lakhs from Kaushambi, 20 lakhs from Lucknow, 1.55 lakhs from Agra, 1.70 lakhs from Bareilly, 3 lakhs from Aligarh, 8.80 lakhs from Nagpur, 1.15 lakhs Raipur, 13.15 lakhs from Indore, 2.60 lakhs from Bhopal, 1.50 lakhs from Bikaner, 1.65 lakhs from Guwahati, 74.70 lakhs from Calcutta, 27 lakhs Hyderabad and 2 lakhs from Aurangabad. During the week, LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG managed to earn a poor 11.50 crores from India and looks on way to be a setback for Yash Raj. In the Overseas, LAAGA CHUNARI MEIN DAAG has grossed a very ordinary $552,338 in the US but is doing very well in the UK, grossing $975,746.

Sibling rivalry seems to have taken its toll on another Priyadarshan project, DHOL. The movie takes a big tumble in its fourth week with just about 25 lakhs. The 8-crore movie has so far collected an impressive 17.50 crores in four weeks from India but remains a semi-hit (hit in Bombay) . DHOL though has flopped in the UK, grossing just $91,559.

Indra Kumar's DHAMAAL also takes a fall, though not as badly as DHOL. During the week, the Dutt, Arshad, Riteish, Jaaved and Aashish starrer collected 6.55 lakhs from Bombay, 4.50 lakhs from Ahmedabad, 1.40 lakhs from Agra, 1.20 lakhs from Hyderabad. Adding another 40 lakhs, DHAMAAL has so far netted 30.40 crores in six weeks from India. The movie has nearly touched a hit status. DHAMAAL is also a good average in the UK with $464,752.
