Emraan Hashmi: Betting 'addas' are glamorized in JANNAT

Bhatts are known for lending authenticity to their characters as well as locations. Since JANNAT revolves around the nexus of bookies, match fixers, cricket players and umpires, it is imperative that this Kunal Deshmukh film features betting 'addas' as well.

So how do these 'addas' come across on the big screen? Are they in the same mould as the shady underworld centers where a few TV screens have the match on while dozens of phones keep ringing in unison?

Reveals Emraan, "Well yes, the 'addas' play an integral part in the film's narrative and it is quite obvious that quite a few TVs are on display with the match on. Also, landlines as well as mobile phones are constantly engaged with number of bookies continuously engaged in placing bets. It is a mad world out there."

"However, since this is cinema one can't have an entirely realistic picture", continues Emraan, "Hence, these 'addas' have been slightly glamorized in order to make them look good. The sets are slightly snazzier while the overall scene's look carries a glossy feel to it.

Apparently quite some research went into making not just the sets come close to reality but also ensure that the lingo of the characters as well as the body language suits those of the bookies and other people involved in the murky world of match fixing.

"Yeah, that's true. I couldn't have gone unprepared on the sets and just read lines verbatim as see in the script", agrees Emraan, "Kunal ensured that I learn the language and mannerisms of a bookie before landing on the sets. He pushed me hard to get the right personality on place before he could begin canning the scenes."

Adds Kunal, "In a film like this which is being attempted for the first time ever on Indian cinema, you can't afford to mess up. One slight error and everything starts appearing fake. This is why I along with Emraan worked hard on our research and started filming JANNAT only after being 100% convinced that we had cracked the basic essence of the film."
