In one of the first ever release strategy of its kind; a mainstream film has seen a DVD release for itself on the same day as its theatrical release. The film in question is MY FRIEND GANESHA 2 which is a sequel to last year's MY FRIEND GANESHA. The film is directed by Rajiv S. Ruia who was the man behind the first installment as well.

This release strategy in fact makes sense because the fate of animation movies in Indian market has been known to one and all. Except for HANUMAN which was a success at the box office, none of the follow up animation films made in Bollywood has worked in India.

If one looks at the recent animation films being released in India, BAL GANESHA, GHATOTHKACH, DASHAVATAR and many more have been miserable failures at multiplexes. In fact MY FRIEND GANESHA (which was part animation-part Live) too was successful mainly on the home video circuit which has prompted the makers to bring out the DVDs of the sequel (which is again part animation - part Live) on Moser Baer at a dirt cheap price of Rs. 50/= only.

Incidentally, while the film's DVDs have flooded the markets all over, the theatrical release has been quite scant with hardly any multiplexes screening it. Also, the film hasn't even fetched an all-India release for itself and is currently playing at select cities only.

The film stars Harsh Chhaya, Bhairavi Goswami and Upasna Singh in lead roles with singers Mika Singh and Raja Hasan in a special appearance. Surprisingly, the film doesn't star child actor Ahsaas Channa who was the lead protagonist in the first installment and is currently busy scaring the audience with her bravura act (in yet another role as a central protagonist) in PHOONK.
