There are two examples in the Chopra family where the father and son have both turned out to be accomplished directors. One is (late) B.R.Chopra and Ravi Chopra and the other is Yash Chopra and Aditya Chopra. While the distinctive styles of the former pair are well known here is an insight into the styles of Yash Chopra and his son Aditya Chopra. Aditya being a private person not much is known vizaviz his dad Yash Chopra. But don't worry; we reach where no one else does!
We recently ran into a very senior technician who has been associated with Yash Chopra for more than 30 years and is now working with his equally illustrious son, Aditya Chopra. We were lucky to catch him during a mass communication seminar, pertaining to filmmaking and spoke to him about Aditya Chopra's style.
Preferring not to be named, he disclosed that Aditya's style is influenced by his father and also late Raj Kapoor, Raj Khosla and Vijay Anand. He went on to disclose that unlike Yashji who prefers closeups and steady shots Aditya prefers trolley shots. May be it is his age due to which he prefers speed and movement, especially during romantic and emotional sequences.
Nice summation! We now understand some of the intricacies of shot taking in the iconic DDLJ and the iconoclastic MOHABBATEIN.
